FRI 6pm - MON 4am = £2.30 first mile - £1.30 thereafter

The vehicle overheads are minimal compared to the cabs and so is the dead mileage coefficient. Delta drivers can achieve a 10:1 live:dead mileage, so on average they travel 1 empty mile for every 10 paid miles.

Drivers don't come to Delta for the fares, they come for the takehome pay.

Many accurate points and a good post.

If the turning circle was challenged in the higher court assuming it was allowed in the magistrates court then in my opinion it would be deemed to be unreasonable in light of what is already available in the way of best practice.

Unfortunately for some reason unknown to man, no vehicle manufacturer or taxi organisation will back an owner in their quest to appeal such a decision.

You make a valid point in that it doesn't matter what the rates are per job but the money in your pocket at the end of the week.

But IMO those rates are not a living wage, and I would be interested to know how many of your drivers get help in one way or another from the government.

There are certainly part-time drivers out there who top up their wage with family credits, just like there are part-time staff in our call centre who do the same. But government assistance is no more available to Delta drivers than it is to Liverpool Hackney drivers, which begs the question... why are drivers from elsewhere, full time or part time, moving to Delta? Drivers gravitate towards better earning potential or more sociable hours, or both, and Delta's steady growth is perhaps evidence that lower fares, more of them and with less time and distance in between them could represent the perfect taxi prescription. Drivers can increase their fares any time by leaving Delta, but what's the point in higher fares elsewhere if there's not enough of them?

Delta had more drivers out working at 10am Tuesday morning this week on the low rates than it had at 8pm Saturday night on the high rates. This could perhaps suggest that on the whole drivers are making enough, else more would work the road during more profitable weekend nights, I guess.

I don't doubt that, but my point is that no-one in our trade should be (part) living off the state.

Why should tax-payers have to subsidize firm's, and council's, low rates?

It's not the fares they are subsidizing, it's the limited hours some workers are able to commit to. Many drivers (and office staff) have dependents at home restricting the hours they can work. The fares are fine for a 40-60 hour week but for drivers who for whatever reason are only able to commit to 20-30 hours a week it makes more sense to top up their wage with tax credits than to have them on unemployment benefit. This applies in any trade.

My point is that for any given number of hours, be it 20 or 60, drivers doing lots of low Delta fares take home more money than drivers doing a handful of expensive fares, with tonnes of wasted fuel and time in between.
