Was it the intention of Parliament to allow councils to restrict the number of taxis operating in an area to maintain a quality service, readily available, and at a reasonable cost to the public?


Queues at taxi ranks show that this intention would not be being met. Nor would the difficulty in hailing a taxi on most streets. Or the substantial rise in Private Hire over the years, where this sector has moved from specialist hires to the provision of a pseudo taxi service to supplement a restricted taxi service failing to meet its market needs.


Or is it because Parliament wanted to contain competition to council owned transport services like buses, taxi-buses and trams?

If so, then they've been successful in achieving this. Except such government interference breaches every tenet of free market economics. Governments should not be running servcies to compete with the private sector.

Unfortunately, the very organisations designed to ensure that markets operate fairly in the interests of consumers, like the Office of Fair Trading, are specifically excluded from bringing market fairness to government organisations.

In short, Parliament has allowed government carte blanche to do whatever it wants. A quite extraordinary state of affairs. Perhaps the redress is through the European anti-competition Laws. Anyone got any experience of this?

No ques,easy to get a taxi no unmet demand.

So, why the taxi marshalls? They're employed at anti-social periods, at some expense, to handle and control the queues you say don't exist?

And those who have walked across town, half way home, before they can hail a taxi don't consider this a difficulty? That's half a job lost to our trade. It mounts up to a lot of lost work.

And the jobs lost by the radio companies, as they drop off their data systems, which they admit to? That's not lost work either?

But of course, the corrupt council contrived the minutest "survey" to "prove" no unmet demand exists

When was the last time you saw the marshals Jim and i did say marshals.
I don't think they walk "half way home" Jim,maybe round the corner but the days of walking "half way home" are long gone and you know it.

If there were a queue, then the licensee would be very daft indeed if he said he wasn't going to employ any more staff because there is no SUD.

But the bar trade is similiar to the taxi trade busy at certain times quiet other times ! How many bars on a Fri/Sat do you go into an get served right away ?
Lets look at it another way, How many times have you been taken at your appointed time at the doctors ? And remember there's a peoples charter thats supposed to be adhered too .
Lets take it one step further, can you get an appointment that suits you on the same day you phone ?

Yeah punters are quite happy to walk in the pashing rain or freezing cold while looking for a cab just so you get your 50 grand plate value
