where is there a law which says you can't offer a cash discount ?

We now take the majority of fares by card and the processing fees, which we obviously pay, not the drivers, are negligible.

Your concept would be interpreted as a 30p surcharge for using card, which it would be, no matter how creative you might think you are being. Surcharges are illegal. Fact. The card processor companies T&C state a customer cannot be charged more for payment by card than they would be by cash payment. Simples, as some would say.

A business might get away with it on an informal basis, but maybe not if it's in a published pricing structure like a restaurant menu, for example. As with any laws or rules, enforcement isn't black and white.

But one thing that won't happen is a local authority including differential card/cash pricing on a hackney carriage tariff card:

Oxford City Council wrote:
As you are aware since 13 January 2018 businesses are no longer permitted to impose surcharges for paying by debit card or credit card. [...]

It is unlawful for a Taxi or Private Hire driver to charge any additional amount (surcharge) for customers paying by debit or credit card.

Customers should not be charged any more than the amount which is displayed on the meter or the agreed fare. The pre-agreed fare cannot include any additional charge for a debit or credit card payment.

I wasn't suggesting that but was suggesting as a company we offer the discount

I think credit card companies have to understand that it is unfair to businesses to expect them to lose a "chunk" albeit small one of their turnover by insisting that cash and credit are on parity whilst they rake in huge profits from their commissions. After all their real reason for doing so is to encourage credit use instead of cash

remember if we lend them our money we get at best 0.1 % interest but have to pay considerably more to borrow or to process transactions

The second highest paid workers in the UK after train drivers are bank clerks ,managers and above

Before he changed his mind, Edders wrote:
the only solution might be if we can persuade the council to do a fares rise and then say to the drivers ALL cash jobs discounted to the old fares but can charge new fares on card

As for it being 'unfair', blah, blah, it's the law of the land, it's not card companies forcing it on the trade.

At some time we will get back to 'Gripe of the Day', however I think a fee could be added, although disguised, if the job was prebooked.

A booking fee is a legitimate charge that is often found on a council approved tariff. That fee could incorporate the fees charged by the card companies.

Pelham bridge in Lincoln closed for 10 weeks. First day today and chaos in the City centre.

Bus timetables, ph office schedules, and Mr Uberman of Melton are all tearing their hair out in frustration.

Avoid Lincoln if you can.

thanks for the warning luckily we only get occasional jobs to Lincoln but we have got one on 19th july

Hopefully after a few days people will work out their alternate routes and it will be a little less gridlocked perhaps the railways could run fewer trains to compensate a little

The by pass now goes from the A46 Newark to Lincoln around the City to the Lincoln to sleaford A15 but people still drive straight through the city because it’s shorter. ](*,) ](*,)

Yet we are rushed off our feet in Melton. What a plonker. Mind you he is only plated in Melton, he comes from Leicester.

Sat nav, or the Uber app are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard in Lincoln now.
