Just for a laugh - I really have to ask how many of you out there comply with ALL the current Hackney Carriage Laws? You think you do with you Fire Extinguishers etc? So how many of you carry spare candles and a bale of hay???????????? Its still a legal requirement!?!!?!??!?

What other laws are we supposed to abide by?

I don't know why we have to have fire extinguishers, nmew ones every so many years by sell by date, your local Fire Brigade, recommend that if your vehicle catches fire GET OUT and get clear, let it burn, its insured for fire

If you can show me the legislation stating it is a legal requirement, then I'll believe you, until then, I won't.

I remember rading in the very old bye-laws that you mustn't feed goats, but pigs and cows are just fine. :D

Hackney carriage
The Town Police Clauses Act 1847 defines ‘hackney carriage’ as a wheeled carriage
used in standing or plying for hire in any street. Originally hackney carriages were
horse-drawn. Nowadays they are usually taxis licensed under the 1847 Act or other
similar Act.
An enduring misconception about hackney carriages is that the driver must keep a
bale of hay in the boot to feed the (nowadays) non-existent horse. This
misconception probably comes about because of section 51 of the London Hackney
Carriage Act 1831 which made it an offence, punishable by a 20 shilling fine, for the
owner or driver of a hackney carriage (or any one else) to4
“feed the horses of or belonging to any hackney carriage in any street, road or
common passage, save only with corn out of a bag, or with hay which he shall
hold or deliver with his hands”.
This offence was repealed by the Statute Law (Repeals) Act 1976. As a result any
taxi driver who travels around accompanied by a bale of hay does so purely for his
own amusement and not in compliance with any legal requirement.

The bale of hay concept was only believed by those who didn't know any different.

There has never been any statute law requiring a hackney carriage driver to carry a bale of hay. I doubt there has ever been a bye law either. Yet you see all kinds of references to this misconception by some of the more intelligent people in our society. I might add that pizzzing on the rear wheel of your carriage is another misconception. Maybe you can find something about that because you wont find anything in any statute legislation.

That used to be one of the joys of the job, getting me todge out in the centre of town. Well apart from wizzing down the bus lanes during rush hour.
