Three men have been taken to hospital after a serious road crash in Dundee. The collision between a grey BMW car and a blue Skoda Superb, which is thought to have been a taxi, happened on the Kingsway at 0220 GMT on Sunday. The 43-year-old Skoda driver and his 33-year-old passenger were taken to Ninewells hospital after suffering serious injuries. The 35-year-old driver of the BMW was also taken to Ninewells but his injuries were not said to be serious. Tayside Police appealed for anyone who saw the incident, or either of the vehicles being driven before the crash, to contact them. I have contacted the police as the BMW passed me like a rocket and failed to slow down on his approach to a roundabout. It was about 2minutes after he passed me that the crash happened .The driver of the skoda was a Perth taxi driver he was dropping of in Dundee when the accident happened. The police have told me he is in a bad way. It makes me realize just how hard and dangerous a job being a taxi driver is. |

Funny old game, I got written off by a drunk a couple of years back, as usual me and his mates ended up in hospital while he walked away unhurt, my mate picked him up after he was released from the nick and all he was worried about was what it was gonna cost to get home and that he would lose his job as he hit me in the works van and that his bird would be annoyed. Them's that cause it always seem to get out ok. |

The drivers name is 41-year-old Gavin McCabe, from Perth. His Skoda taxi and a BMW were involved in a collision. |

I have been interviewed today as i witnessed the BMW before the crash. The BMW driver is going to be charge with death by dangerous driving.He did not have a licence, had been under the influence of alcohol and was driven the car without they owners consent. The police also said that they do not think it was a suicide attempt. This man should be locked up for a very long time

This is really sad news. You go out to earn a living and don't come back The most annoying thing is that the cause of the accident is still able to walk around and probably feeling sorry for himself. There is no justice for this and IMO it won't be seen to be done.

Suicidal driver admits 75mph fatal smash A suicidal driver sped down the Kingsway in Dundee and smashed into a taxi at a speed of almost 75mph, the High Court in Edinburgh was told today. The 41-year-old taxi driver, Gavin McCabe was so seriously injured he died in intensive care at Ninewells Hospital a week later. Halim Cholmeley (36) admitted killing Mr McCabe by driving dangerously on March 15 last year. He admitted taking his ex-partner’s car without her consent and driving while disqualified and without insurance. Cholmeley drove from Lochee along Lochee Road and Tullideph Road before joining the Kingsway where the fatal accident occurred. He admitted that on March 15 on Kingsway West, at its junction with Myrekirk Road, he caused the death of Mr McCabe, from Perth, by driving a car dangerously, and while under the influence of alcohol, drove at excessive speed as he approached the roundabout and failed to give way causing the vehicles to collide. The charge continues that both vehicles were damaged and a passenger in the taxi, Azeez Butali was injured and Mr McCabe suffered such severe brain injuries that he died on March 21 in Ninewells. Cholmeley, whose address was given in court as Easter Lednathie Cottage, Glen Prosen, Kirriemuir, sustained relatively minor injuries. Advocate Depute Michael Stuart told the court that over the afternoon and evening of March 14 last year Cholmeley had been consuming alcohol in the company of his now ex-partner and friends. Around midnight he returned by taxi to his partner’s flat after being at the Queen Anne pub. He told his partner he was going out again with the taxi waiting outside and he then went to the Liquid nightclub. Some time before 2.30am he returned to the flat and removed the keys to his partner’s BMW without her permission or knowledge and drove off. Mr Stuart said, “He then appears to have driven the car across the centre of Dundee at speeds estimated by various witnesses to be between 60 and 70mph before joining Kingsway West. “He drove along Kingsway West towards the roundabout at Myrekirk Road.” Mr Stuart said visibility was good, the weather was fair and dry and there was an unobstructed view at 750 metres to the roundabout. Mr McCabe was turning right across the westbound carriageway of Kingsway West at the roundabout when Cholmeley failed to give way, drove onto the roundabout and, “collided broadside” with Mr McCabe’s taxi. “Tayside Police crash investigation officers recorded that tyre marks left at the scene by the BMW were apparent for 11.64 metres prior to the Give Way lines at the entry to the roundabout. “Investigating officers calculated Cholmeley was travelling at a minimum speed of 77mph immediately prior to the tyre marks left on the road surface and at around 67mph at the point of impact with the Skoda taxi. “They calculated the Skoda was travelling at around 25 mph.” Mr Stuart said Cholmeley’s alcohol level after the collision was 106 mgs against a legal limit of 80 mgs. The advocate depute continued, “Several witnesses — civilian, emergency services and medical staff — stated Cholmeley said it had been his intention to commit suicide. “At around 9am on the same day, he told a police officer that he regretted his actions as he realised he had been foolish.” The court was told Cholmeley was single and stayed with his mother although at the time of the incident he would stay with his then partner at weekends. He was unemployed but was previously employed in Manchester as a recruitment consultant. “He had been absent from work suffering from depression until his employment was terminated around November 2008 when he returned to live with his mother in Kirriemuir.” Lord Kinclaven said he would require social inquiry reports and adjourned sentencing to March 24 at the High Court in Edinburgh. Suicide my arse . When i was interviewed by the police they said that they did not think he was attempting suicide because he had a seat-belt on. Also you would not drive over a roundabout ,you would hit a wall or something similar. Either way he took the life of someone out trying to make a living and should be lock up for life. I think the norm for this offence is 7 years but i bet he gets less because of his early guilty plea. the bastxrd

A depressed driver who caused a fatal crash is jailed Halim Cholmeley admitted causing death by dangerous driving A man who killed a taxi driver when he crashed a BMW into his cab has been jailed for six years. Halim Cholmeley was over the limit for alcohol and banned from driving when he caused the crash in Dundee in March last year, killing Gavin McCabe. The High court in Edinburgh heard the 36-year-old was depressed and awaiting counselling and told bystanders he had tried to end his life. Mr McCabe's family said the sentence would not make up for their loss. In the early hours of 15 March 2009, after an evening of drinking, Cholmeley took the keys to his girlfriend's BMW without permission. Advocate depute Michael Stuart said: "Mr Cholmeley then appears to have driven the car across the centre of Dundee at speeds estimated by various witnesses to be between 60mph and 70mph, before joining the Kingsway West." He crashed into the side of the taxi being driven by 41-year-old Mr McCabe, who was thrown from the driver's seat and sustained fatal head injuries. His passenger Azeez Butali, 33, suffered injuries to his collar-bone, shoulder and ribs and had to be cut from the wreckage. Cholmeley survived with minor injuries. The court heard that Cholmeley had a history of depression and had lost his job as a recruitment consultant in Manchester four months earlier, and had moved in with his mother in Kirriemuir. In February last year he was referred to psychiatric services by his GP, but at the time of the accident no offer of counselling had been made. Family 'devastated' Cholmeley admitted causing Mr McCabe's death by driving dangerously, and also pleaded guilty to taking the BMW without consent and driving while banned and without insurance. As Mr McCabe's family left the court they said they were "devastated". One family member said: "A six year sentence will never make up for the fact that we have lost Gavin." "He (Cholmeley) will be back with his family in four years but we will never have Gavin back." Defence advocate Matt Jackson offered them a apology on behalf of Cholmeley. He said: "The grotesque irony is that he lived and another man died.
