Taxi driver's late night terror as thug smashes car window with pole

A late night fare ended in terror for an East Kilbride taxi driver when a thug smashed his car's windows with a metal pole.

Calum McCormack's target was the taxi's passenger, whom he'd chased along the street.

McCormack, 24, of Parkhead, Glasgow, appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted possession of an offensive weapon in Skovlunde Way, near Ballerup recreation area, on September 10, last year.

McCormack also admitted chasing and trying to strike the man with the metal pole and causing damage to the taxi.

Chloe O'Hara, prosecuting, said the taxi driver arranged to pick up McCormack's intended victim and a female from an address in East Kilbride shortly before midnight.

She told the court: "He took them to the football pitches at Ballerup.

"[The man] asked the driver to wait for him and left the taxi.

"He went to some bushes and at this point could not be seen.

"[He] then saw the accused in possession of a pole and ran back towards the taxi.

"The driver saw the accused chasing [the man] while brandishing a three-foot long metallic pole.

"The driver tried to pull away, but McCormack smashed the passenger window near where [the passenger] was sitting.

"He then swung the pole again, striking and breaking the rear windscreen as the driver sped off."

Ms O'Hara said police were contacted and officers found the driver and the intended victim in "a state of shock".

No reason was given for the man going to the football pitches at that time of night, but he confirmed that McCormack was the person he had met there.

Sheriff Colin Dunipace deferred sentence on McCormack until May 27 for a criminal justice social work report and an electronic tagging assessment.

He has been in custody since his arrest in September and remains behind bars.
