A taxi driver who was money laundering for an organised crime gang was found with more than £33,000 cash in the back of his cab.

David Worley, 58, had been watched by undercover police officers carrying out surveillance on his drug- related pick-up in Scotland.

A mystery individual was seen briefly climbing into the back of Worley's taxi after he drove from Liverpool and pulled up outside shops in Perth.

The man left the cab and Worley started heading back to the north of England but he was pulled over on the M9 north of Falkirk and found with a bag stuffed full of cash.

Today at Perth Sheriff Court, Worley, from Liverpool, admitted receiving criminal property in the form of cash in Glengarry Road, Perth, on 10 September 2020.

Fiscal depute Marie Irvine told the court: "He is employed as a taxi driver and has no previous convictions. Over a number of months intelligence was received that a Liverpool-based organised crime group was concerned in the supply of controlled drugs.

"Detectives were deployed as a surveillance team. A Ford Focus was observed on the A9 northbound and David Worley was identified as the driver.

"His vehicle parked on Glengarry Road near the shops. Another male arrived as a passenger in a Suzuki Swift. This drove past the Focus and and the male was seen to acknowledge the accused.

"One of the males emerged carrying a drawstring bag over his shoulder. They entered the accused's taxi as a rear passenger for a short time. When they exited they no longer had the bag."

She told the court that followed and stopped a short time later and the drawstring bag was found in the taxi. It was found to contain £33,440 in banknotes.

Solicitor David Sinclair, defending, said: "He has been a taxi driver for 26 years. He has no previous convictions. This was a particularly serious matter in which he has concerned himself.

"What has occurred here has been as a result of undue pressure being exerted upon him. He is a man who is suggestible and easily influenced. He got involved in this criminal conduct."

Worley was granted bail and sentence was deferred for the preparation of criminal justice and restriction of liberty order reports.

Taxi driver caught with over £33,000 in cash in his cab at Perth shops is spared jail

A taxi driver, caught with more than £33,000 in cash in the back of his cab after police set up a sting operation on a Perth housing estate, was spared jail this week.

Perth Sheriff Court was told that the undercover surveillance was planned to combat drug dealing masterminded by an organised crime group from Liverpool.

A team of four officers kept watch on a string of shops in Darnhall’s Glengarry Road - and it led to the arrest of 58-year-old David Worley.

But he escaped a custodial sentence on Wednesday after his lawyer said “undue pressure” had been exerted on him by the criminal fraternity.

Sheriff J. Craig McSherry also noted he was a first offender and imposed a high-end community payback order as a “direct alternative” to time behind bars.

Worley will have to complete 300 hours of unpaid work in the next 18 months after he admitted contravening the 2002 Proceeds of Crime Act.

He admitted that on September 10, 2020, at Perth ’s Glengarry Road - and the A9 south - he received “criminal property” in the form of cash - and then concealed and transferred it.

Depute fiscal Marie Irvine told the court: “Over a period of months, intelligence was received by Police Scotland that a Liverpool-based organised crime group was concerned in the supply of controlled drugs.”

Worley was the target of the covert operation and he was identified as the driver of a Ford Focus travelling north on the A9, towards Perth.

It then parked near the shops in Glengarry Road and another car - a Suzuki Swift, with two men in it - drove past the Focus.

A man in the Suzuki was “seen to acknowledge” the accused before that vehicle drove into Glenshee Terrace.

“One of the males emerged and walked towards the blue Ford Focus,” added the fiscal.

He was carrying a bag over his shoulder and was seen entering the back of the Focus.

“He exited the vehicle and was no longer in possession of the bag.”

Solicitor David Sinclair said the accused, of Barrymore Road, Liverpool, was a first offender and had driven taxis for 26 years.

“What has occurred is a result of undue pressure being exerted on him.

“He’s a man who is quite suggestible and easily influenced.”

Sentence on Worley had been deferred for a Community Justice Social Work report and a restriction of Liberty Order assessment and he had been freed on bail.

Greed.

It's easy money, until such times they get caught.
