And continuing in pedancy mode, I'm surprised no one pointed out that the GB number plate is also inconsistent with the Union Jack, because it's the flag of the Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Right on cue, the government have announced that the 'GB' designation is to be replaced by 'UK', apparently to be more 'inclusive' of Northern Ireland. This was after the new design had just been introduced six months ago in the wake of Brexit, apparently.
But there's been a bit of a hoohah from pro-GB traditionalists, and this Daily Mail piece gives the impression that the new change is because Sinn Fein complained about Northern Ireland cars having to display GB.
Can't quite work out how appeasing Sinn Fein would entail changing 'GB' to 'UK', but there you go
But anyone interested in the political machinations could maybe read this Daily Mail piece:
'A slap in the face for people who are proud to be Great British': Tory fury at move by Grant Shapps to ditch traditional 'GB' sticker in favour of 'UK' - after Sinn Fein complainhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... ckers.html• Legal emblem for cars registered in Britain is being changed from GB to UK
• The tweak is due to take effect from September with AA warning of confusion
• Tory MPs branded move a 'slap in the face' for people who are 'proud to be GB'
• The AA motoring firm bemoaned 'losing another element of British motoring'
• Government sources said it is attempt to be 'more inclusive' of Northern IrelandThink I'll bodyswerve the minutiae of the politics, and just be thankful that it's a good job I don't, and have no intention of, driving abroad
