That the 'taxi' driver has been charged here is unsurprising, but I'd guess it's either been some kind of ruck, or someone acting the goat, and it all went badly wrong :-|

Headline says the deceased was 'thrown from taxi', but article says he was holding onto it from the outside, so 'thrown from taxi' doesn't sound right - makes it sound he was in the taxi but was thrown outside.

Not clear either why the passing Merc driver has been arrested - it reads like he just happened to be travelling in the opposite direction when the deceased let go of the taxi.

A third driver has also been arrested, but nothing in the article to suggest how that driver was involved at all.

But with stuff like that the cab driver and the driver of the Merc that struck the deceased will automatically be under suspicion. Let's hope justice is done :?

A Fleetwood man in his 30s has died after suffering multiple injuries after being thrown from a taxi on Blackpool’s Promenade.

Police believe that the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had been holding onto the outside of a moving taxi. He was then thrown from the vehicle towards a Mercedes car travelling in the opposite direction.

They were called around 12.20am today (Sunday 13) to a report of a serious collision on the Promenade, close to the Sea Life Centre. The driver of the taxi, a 58-year-old man from Blackpool, was not injured, but arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The driver of the Mercedes, a 69-year-old man from Blackpool, was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. A third man, aged 45, also from Blackpool, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is in custody.

Police have now launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses and dashboard mounted camera footage.

Expressing his condolences, Temp Sgt Martin Wilcock of Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations Unit said: “Our thoughts are very much with the man involved and his family at this very sad and difficult time. While we have made three arrests, this is a complex investigation and we need people to come forward to tell us what they saw. Any information, no matter how seemingly insignificant or small, could assist our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting log 0031 of November 13.

I'd driven past there about 5mins before it happened. Nothing sticks in my mind as being out of the ordinary.

There weren't many people around that area at that time. There are ranks in that area but nobody ranks on them at that time as there is nothing open, so you would be relying on people walking past.

There is a local taxi/PH driver facebook private group. Somebody did post asking for anyone with info to get in touch as his brother was involved, didn't say in what capacity/

With all the people who were arrested initially, it all looked very messy, so maybe not a surprise it's taken well over a year to bring charges.

But unusual for this kind of report as compared to the normal portrayal of the basic facts in articles like this - this reads as much like an argument about how great a guy the deceased was, complete with smiling photo with his four-year-old daughter. Reads more like something suitable for a human interest report after his death or funeral, as opposed to an article about someone charged with causing his death by dangerous driving.

But just after midnight on Saturday, and described by friends and family as having a 'sense of adventure' and 'lived without fear', thus that rings alarm bells for me as a late-night taxi driver.

A taxi driver has appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The charge related to an incident on Blackpool Promenade, near to the Sea Life Centre on November 11 2022.

The incident resulted in the death of 35-year-old dad-of-one Marc Shepherd.

A police investigation showed he had been holding onto the outside of a moving taxi, and was thrown from the vehicle towards a Mercedes car travelling in the opposite direction, near the Sea Life Centre.

Andrew Maden, 59, of Beverley Grove, Blackpool, was sent on bail to Preston Crown Court charged with causing the death by dangerous driving of a London taxi of Mr Shepherd.

The court was told Maden will be pleading not guilty to the charge.

Mr Shepherd, of Whinfield Avenue, Fleetwood was described as a loyal friend with a sense of adventure who ‘always brightened up a room’.

His brother, David, said :”He always had time for everyone. He was loved by many just for being him. One thing that will always stay with me is you always heard him before you saw him. His laugh was unique.”

Rakin Rahman, who was a close friend of Marc’s, said: “This guy was loved all around by his friends. The whole town of Fleetwood is in shock. I try to see the positive that it would’ve brought a lot of people together, and show compassion to each other, who would’ve not done that otherwise.”

Marc loved DIY and being outdoors. He left behind a four-year-old daughter, Millicent.

David added: He built a two-storey shed at one point. He enjoyed wild camping, he made a little camp in a tree, and he liked canoeing…he and his mates rowed over to Heysham once. He lived with no fear.”

If he was such a saint how come he was hanging off the side of a taxi as the driver was presumably trying to get away from him

Interesting that the magistrates hearing was in Blackburn not anywhere nearer

Blackpool magistrates courts are closed due to that dodgy concrete scare. The current courts were due to close soon anyway as they are being relocated to a new site, so not worth repairing the current site. They haven't started building the new site yet, its supposed to be in 2026.

So everything is being shipped out to other places in Lancashire.
