Well this is a bit bizarre. I mean, what has speaking out over this got to do with possibly losing their licence?

Are the criminals running the council now? Some might say 'yes', but I doubt it's as bad as he's making it sound here :?

Colchester taxi driver tells of 'epidemic of attacks'

AN experienced taxi driver has claimed cabbies are facing an “epidemic” of attacks in Colchester.

The cabbie, who does not want to be named, said windows are being caved in and tyres slashed by criminals.

He claimed the attacks are not just incidents of petty crime but instead a wider operation targeting taxis in Colchester.

The taxi driver, who has been ferrying customers about for almost 20 years, said drivers fear if they speak out they will have the licences revoked.

“It has happened in the Hythe, some in New Town and others in Shrub End and out to Stanway,” he said.

“It is going to keep on going, I don’t see where it will stop. We’re just sticking a plaster over our vehicles and then getting done again.”

The cabbie said his windows have been smashed twice in the past three weeks, both times near Colchester North Railway Station.

Another colleague has been targeted five times in about the same timeframe, he claimed.

“There are Hackney Carriages being done, private hire taxis done. We’re losing a lot of money on repairs and being off the road,” he said.

“We take our signs off but we still have yellow plates. We’ve been told to put up signs stating we keep no money inside our vehicles when parked.

“If you’re a career criminal and you see this then you’re probably going to try your luck anyway.”

He continued: “I stayed up for five nights and then had to go to work. I know once my taxi is off the road that’s it.

“The trouble is nobody knows about it other than taxi drivers.

“Everybody is too scared to speak out. They don’t want to lose their licences.”

Last week a 36-year-old woman was charged with 16 offences following an investigation into several vehicle break-ins.

The woman, of Colchester, was detained by Essex Police after bank cards were stolen from vehicles in the city and then used in nearby shops.

She is due to appear at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on February 14.

Maybe the thefts are being organised by members of an ethnic group and he is frightened of being accused of being a racist.

But it's got nothing to do with the council, it's down to the police and drivers not leaving anything of value in their motors.

Sounds a bit like Grimsby, but at least this time there isn't the mystery thing about not reporting stuff.

Stills are from a very clear video on the website, but unfortunately the perp never gets particularly close to the camera.

But good of the HCA chair to remind us that working with broken windows is never a good look

Colchester suspected car burglar captured in CCTV footage

A TAXI boss has said attacks against cabbies in Colchester are the worst he has seen during his 29 year career.

The chairman of the Colchester Hackney Carriage Association said crooks targeting taxis are “costing drivers a fortune”.

He claimed since December at least 60 Hackney Carriages in the city have been the subject of a break-in or attempted burglary.

It comes as footage shared with the Gazette shows a woman trying door handles and shining a torch in the windows of a parked up taxi in St Leonard’s Road.

The incident, which took place at 4.30am on January 8, is just one of many being seen across Colchester, according to cabbies.

The chairman, who requested to remain anonymous, added Greenstead is a particular area of concern for drivers.

He said: “At the moment it is so tough being a taxi driver. It is costing us a fortune.

“The problem every year is at its worst around Christmas and New Year but it has never been as bad as it is now.

“I have been doing this since 1994 and this past year I have seen it become so bad.”

The cabbie said another recent incident saw a window smashed on a taxi driver’s car while it was left parked in the Leisure World car park, in Cowdray Avenue, in broad daylight.

Other acts of vandalism have been reported in the Hythe, Shrub End and Stanway.

“You can’t go round picking passengers up with broken windows, it is not professional to just put plastic in place,” he added.

“Customers don’t want to get in a car like that having paid a lot of money, so we have to take our vehicles off the road.

“This could take three days, it could take a week. All this time you’re not working and so you’re losing money.”

Last week another cabbie said there is an ongoing "epidemic" of attacks against vehicles in Colchester.

He said he has heard tales of windows being caved in and tyres slashed by criminals.

This is getting more and more bizarre. So this guy's car has been 'attacked' four times now, yet he leaves a satnav, dashcam and wallet with £80 in it? :-s

And it's got to be the same woman as in the photos above, yet police effectively say case closed? And their advice is to keep cars locked and fit an alarm and tracker? :-s

Then a pointless 'safety is paramount' (literally) statement from the council? :-s

Then the stuff about drivers afraid of getting revoked if they report stuff? :-s

There's a videon on the website, but it's mostly nothing because the perp comes and goes over the eight minutes, so doesn't really add much to the stills here :?

Colchester taxi driver reports fourth attack on parked car

A TAXI driver has told how Colchester cabbies are being left “financially crippled” by crooks after a thief smashed his car window for the FOURTH time.

Melvyn Moss, 63, said he would retire tomorrow if he could afford to after suffering the latest in a long line of vandal attacks.

The veteran cabbie of 20 years left his Hackney Carriage parked on the street outside his home in Greenstead on January 27.

At around 11.30pm a neighbour’s CCTV camera captured a woman throwing an item through a window.

The footage also captures a woman shining a light through a rear window and trying to open the doors.

Mr Moss said the damage cost £500 to repair, while a wallet containing £80 in cash was stolen from a door pocket.

“It’s always a smash and grab, I had a sat nav they didn’t take and dashcam they didn’t take,” he said.

“I do blame myself for [the wallet], I should have taken everything out.

“We’re all in terror of it happening to us.

“To me, financially this is extremely serious, we’re earning to try and survive.

“But we’re being attacked, apart from the attitude of passengers, the ones who don’t pay – the runners, we are getting hit left right and centre.

“I’m retiring in two years, if I can afford it. But I would do it now if I could."

Mr Moss said the damage to his taxi across four separate attacks has cost him around £1,500.

He said his colleagues, Colchester Council licensed taxi drivers, reported incidents including thefts or abuse “on a daily or nightly basis”.

“I can honestly say this is worse than it’s ever been,” he said.

“A lot of drivers don’t report it to the police, but the more of us who complain the more likely something will be done.

“This is financially crippling.”

Last month another cabbie, who asked to remain anonymous, said taxi drivers in Colchester are facing an "epidemic" of attacks.

He said windows are being caved in and tyres slashed by criminals.

Last month the chairman of the Colchester Hackney Carriage Association said crooks targeting taxis are “costing drivers a fortune”.

He claimed since December at least 60 Hackney Carriages in the city have been the subject of a break-in or attempted burglary.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “The unknown suspect smashed the window of a taxi before stealing a wallet containing cash.

"Due to a lack of positive lines of enquiry, this investigation has been temporarily filed.

"Should further information come to light, this will be reviewed and the investigation could be reopened.

"Preventing and investigating thefts from any motor vehicle is a high priority for Essex Police and we appreciate the impact these crimes have on victims.

"To keep your vehicle safe, we advise drivers to keep their car locked and consider fitting your car with an alarm or a tracking device."

A Colchester Council spokesman said: “Public safety is of paramount concern to us.

“Our local hackney carriage and private hire drivers come to work to help people and do not expect or deserve to be attacked or abused for simply doing their job.

“We will continue to support local drivers where we can, but advise they call the police in the first instance to report any criminal activity or behaviour.”
