Echoes of a previous article about tipping. The London regional analysis doesn't really mean anything to me, and I doubt it's of much importance anyway, and the numbers between the highest and lowest tipping areas isn't that much. The time of day when people most likely to tip is a bit more interesting. But, as per last time round, the figures are provided by an automated payment system, which presumably depends on the driver activating the tip option, which I certainly won't do on mine. Therefore if it's broadly similar to Zettle then it would show that I've NEVER received a tip via a card payment Of course, I do get the odd card tip, but it's mainly students who use cards here, and tips are like hen's teeth. And it's mostly students at this time of year, therefore... On the other hand, the summer tourists are still totally the opposite, and generally do tip, and pay by cash. Although presumably that will change in coming years, although it's just a question of how quickly. Thus to that extent the analysis below tells people nothing at all about the likelihood of getting a tip, because it's all about automated payments (and, again, it will depend on drivers using the tip option on their card reader). And it's a bit rich of the automated payment bod to say that to a degree drivers still depend on tips, when automated payments have effectively destroyed tipping, at least for me Greenwich and Bexley named worst tippers of taxi drivers https://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/2329 ... i-drivers/ London is known for its endless iconic features, from the still-standing red telephone boxes, double-decker buses and of course, the London Underground. But if there is one thing that is synonymous with the capital, it's the unforgettable black taxi cabs. Taxi cabs are often described as the saving grace of the capital's transport system, with reassurance that if you ever needed a ride, a cab would be just around the corner. Although the iconic taxis are often dismissed for their high prices many still use this transport, but not everyone leaves a tip. Two South East London Boroughs named worst for tipping taxi drivers New data found that two South East London boroughs are named amongst the worst tippers. Greenwich was named the third worst for tippers with just 22.1% of taxi users tipping their drivers whilst the borough of Bexley sees just 25% of taxi users tip their drivers. The data comes as London cab drivers face a growing number of threats to their livelihood. Transport for London’s Finance Committee recently found that the number of licensed taxis in the capital has plunged by a quarter since 2020, as the post-pandemic shift to hybrid working erodes passenger numbers. The analysis also found that the average gratuity paid to drivers across the capital was 10% or £3.10, and that passengers are most likely to leave a tip in the evening, between 7pm and midnight. Research also shows that late-night revellers are the least likely to leave a tip, with the worst hours for tipping recorded between midnight and 5am. Richard Carter, Co-founder of Lopay said: “Taxis and minicabs are part of the lifeblood of the capital, keeping Londoners and visitors alike on the move. But while London’s black cabs are global icons, earning a living behind the wheel of one is getting steadily harder. “Tips provide a welcome boost but, as our data shows, they can’t be relied upon. That’s why taxi drivers, like all small businesses right now, need to watch every penny at the point of sale.” |

I've never enabled the tip option on the various card terminals I've had over the years. So after reading this I decided to enable it on my Lopay terminal last night. What a pain in the a*** the tip option is. I did 3 trips that paid by card and tipped. The tip amounts were £1.10, 70p and 50p 3 different options to choose from, Percentage You can specify 3 percentage values Fixed Values You can specify 3 amounts Smart Tipping. You specify a value, a sale over that amount will show the Percentage options, a sale below the specified value show the fixed value options. So to do a sale, (if you have the terminal like me) You have to put the fare in your phone app and click charge, this then sends the sale to the terminal. This is the normal procedure and you could now present the terminal to the passenger. You get asked on the terminal if you want to add a tip (x) for no, (tick) for yes. If you press the tick you then get the 3 percentage/fixed amounts listed along with a 4 Custom option. So I had to use the the custom option on each of my 3 trips. You then type in the tip value and and press the tick. You can now present the terminal to the passenger. I also enabled it on my Sumup terminal. You enter the fare, it then asks if you want to add a tip, if yes you just type in the amount. Much easier than the Lopay system, but I use Lopay as my main machine as it so much more reliable than the Sumup I've just made some changes to my excel spreadsheet to give me some details about my card payments and tips. Last 3 years average of 10% of card transactions have also tipped. Average amount around £1 (usually rounded up to next full £ or round up + 50p/£1. This tax year out of 2128 card payments 222 have tipped a total of £258. These figure do miss out a few jobs where they pay by card but then tip you in cash, I then usually add that tip in with my next cash job. I'm not bothering using the tip option after last night and looking at those figure. The card commission on £300 over the year isn't going to bankrupt me. |
