Image: Island EchoA Police car has sustained significant damage in a side-on impact involving a taxi in Newport this evening (Thursday).The collision between the marked Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary Ford Focus Active and a VW Passat taxi happened at the junction of St James’ Street and Lugley Street shortly before 18:30.
The brand new Police car’s airbags were deployed as a result of the impact but thankfully the uniformed officers, nor the driver of the taxi, have been injured.
The road was blocked for a while but has since reopened.
Tonight’s incident is the latest in a series of collisions today including crashes at Calbourne, Ryde, Chale, Thorness and on Yarmouth Road near Shalfleet.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary say they are investigating yesterday’s incident to establish the exact circumstances of the collision.
It’s said that the 2 Police officers in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and the taxi driver from the other vehicle involved, were taken to St Mary’s Hospital as a precautionary measure. However, they were later released.
It has been confirmed that the Police car was not responding on blue lights and sirens at the time.
