MEN have gone to town with this, as did the emergency services, but looks like it was largely a false alarm. And not even clear if it's trade related, but it happened outside a 'taxi rank', and the suspect got into a 'taxi'. Greater Manchester Police have now confirmed the substance was not noxious. Both the man and child were medically examined by paramedics at the scene only as a 'precautionary measure', GMP added in a statement. No age for the child victim has been revealed. Police and firefighters were called to the scene in the centre of Prestwich at 12.50pm today - Friday. Images from the scene show police and senior firefighters positioned off Bury New Road in Prestwich. A cordon has been set up which covers part of Bury New Road and Poppythorn Lane, between the Railway and Naturalist and the White Horse pubs. Emergency services personnel were seen in the images liaising with the private hire taxi firm based on Poppythorn Lane, near to Prestwich's Longfield Centre. In a statement, police described an 'isolated incident', although no arrests have been made. The force said in a statement: "Initial enquiries suggest an altercation occurred between two men outside a taxi rank, the suspect then got into a taxi and threw an unknown substance over the man and his child. "This is believed to be an isolated incident and this individual does not pose a wider public threat."

On the other hand, it's the same 'rank' where a 68-year-old controller was knocked about a couple of years ago, and where a young woman was knocked out in 2018. And no doubt a whole host of lesser incidents. Which maybe helps explain the scale of today's response: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=37016&p=410063

The ITV News version using the terminology we're more familar with, but also calls it a 'taxi depot' 'Taxi depot' maybe not the most accurate terminology, but at least most of use could work it out from that, unlike 'taxi rank'... Well it looks like the ruck was a 'queue-jumping' incident over whose car it was So if that's the way they're carrying on there at 1pm, it's no wonder worse happens late at night. Interesting, though, that this newer MEN article (and the photo captions in the website version) use the term 'office' more often than 'rank', although even the official GMP statement uses the word 'rank'. "There was a bit of an altercation about getting the next taxi," said Katherine. "It was the taxi for the family that the perpetrator jumped in. The sisters say they were given water to pour over the toddler and they told the dad to pour it over his head and take off his coat. They then phoned the emergency services for help. Ruth said: "The baby's screaming got me. We saw the thing being squirted. They didn't know what to do with the baby... we said 'pour water, pour water'." He was wearing a black coat or hoodie with dark trousers at the time of the incident, the sisters said. Officers spent a number of hours at the scene following the incident while an air ambulance was also seen in the area. The dad and his daughter were assessed, and GMP confirmed the substance had not been poisonous. A spokesperson for the force said: "At around 12:50pm today (Friday, February 10 2023) officers were called to reports of an unknown substance being thrown on two pedestrians on Poppythorn Lane in Prestwich. Emergency services attended the scene to conduct medical assessments of the two victims and a thorough examination of the scene. "Initial enquiries suggest an altercation occurred between two men outside a taxi rank, the suspect then got into a taxi and threw an unknown substance over the man and his child. "Officers are also now able to confirm the substance thrown on the victims is not noxious and the victims were medically examined at the scene as a precautionary measure." so because he has a toddler he assumed that should automatically give him priority. No doubt there was considerable drink involved and a fight ensued. I'd laugh if the "substance" turned out to be water or a can of drink.

So you're saying the it was rightfully the perp's taxi? How do you work that out? Everthing in the article points to it rightfully being the family's car, and the single perp tried to jump into it, and when it kicked off he threw the substance. And it says near the top of the first article, and several times thereafter in the thread, that the substance was not noxious, which I suspect will be the last word in that regard.
