Where to start with this?

Actually, can't be bothered, but one irony is that she's alluding that male drivers are a dangerous menace, and to that extent more females would provide 'more assurance', yet it's Wolverhampton City Council here ](*,)

Which of course means that the stat saying there are 20,000 drivers 'working in the city' is nonsense (and even ignoring the generic use of 'taxi').

And, to be fair, although surely the reason there's few women is because it's the men drivers who are left to fend for themselves (but that point isn't made), the council here seems to have purchased 20,000 personal safety alarms for the drivers :-o

Wonder what kind of alarms they are, that will help protect a Wolves-badged driver working in Blackpool, say? :-k

Call for more women taxi drivers as 97 per cent are men in Wolverhampton

Councillor says additional females would bring about 'greater assurance'

A drive to encourage more women in Wolverhampton to become taxi drivers has been launched by a councillor, after figures revealed that 97 per cent of the 20,000 working in the city were men. Councillor Wendy Dalton (Con. Merry Hill) called for a campaign to recruit more women into the trade at a meeting of the council's regulatory committee yesterday (Wednesday), which was also International Women's Day.

She told members that she felt having more women taxi drivers would bring about "a greater assurance" for all passengers. "Statistics for taxi driver numbers in Wolverhampton show us that 97 per cent of them are men," she said.

"Speaking as a woman, I'd like to see more women taxi drivers as I think this would give all of us more assurance when taking a taxi somewhere, particularly if someone is travelling alone. What campaign could this council put forward to have an equality and a balance of more women in the profession? This issue is very relevant, especially as this week is International Women's Week."

Greg Bickerdike, the council's licensing manager, said: "The initiative of working with women is something we are aware of and we are looking at how we can support this and encourage more women into the trade. We do have women who are in this profession, so it will involve speaking to them and understanding the benefits that a career as a licensed driver can provide them with - particularly around flexibility.

"And then the next step would be using that information to promote it to other women who maybe fancy a career change, or women who are out of work, in order for us to get more female drivers licensed with us. That is something we are aware of and are working on, so I will be reporting back on it."

Cllr Dalton said she would look forward to seeing a campaign for more women taxi drivers being implemented in the city. The regulatory committee also approved the purchase of personal safety alarms for all vehicles licensed as a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle in the city.

Members also endorsed the ‘Safety Tips for Taxi and Private Hire Drivers’ guidance, produced to help workers in the trade stay safe. Following consultation, the council obtained quotes from three companies. The winning bidder with £41,600 for the supply of 20,000 alarms was JNE Security Ltd.

Interesting that this alternative source changes the two occurrences of 'greater assurance' for women passengers in the above article to 'greater safety' and 'more security'.

And this article cites the above article as the source, and the councillor's words are in quote marks, so should really be precisely what she said.

So the significance of the changes isn't really clear, but presumably they were made for a reason, but which one is genuinely the words used by the councillor isn't clear.

But it seems to me that saying more women drivers provides 'greater assurance' to women passengers seems slightly less of a slur on male drivers than the words 'greater safety' and 'more security'.

In other words, 'greater assurance' seems a bit of a euphemism :?

Demand more female taxi drivers as Wolverhampton is 97 per cent male

A councilor has launched a campaign to encourage more women in Wolverhampton to become taxi drivers after figures showed 97 per cent of the city’s 20,000 employees were men. Councilor Wendy Dalton (Con. Merry Hill) called for a campaign to recruit more women into commerce yesterday (Wednesday) at a meeting of the Council’s Regulatory Committee, which was also International Women’s Day.

She told members that she believed more female taxi drivers would bring “greater safety” to all passengers. “Statistics on the number of taxi drivers in Wolverhampton tell us that 97 per cent of them are men,” she said.

“As a woman, I would like to see more female taxi drivers as I think it would give us all more security when taking a taxi anywhere, especially when someone is traveling alone. What campaign might this council propose? Equal rights and a balanced ratio of more women in the workplace? This topic is very timely, especially as this week is International Women’s Week.”

Greg Bickerdike, the Council’s Licensing Manager, said: “We are aware of the initiative to work with women and are looking at how we can support this and encourage more women to trade. We have women working in this profession so it’s going to be about speaking to them and understanding the benefits a career as a licensed driver can offer them – particularly in terms of flexibility.

“And then the next step would be to use that information to promote it to other women who might be looking for a career change or women who are unemployed so that we allow more female drivers to join us.” That’s something we’re aware of and working on, so I’ll report on that.”

I suspect there are a lot of dirty pervy men, particularly the pi**ed up variety, that would like to see a lot more women drivers.

But should they be stupid enough to license in that 'bottom of the barrel' council, at least they will have those free alarms.

They will be of great use down some dark lane in the dead of night.

Is it just me whose level of tolerance for councillors is as near to zero as it can be?
