Not particularly exciting, but slightly unusual offence, as opposed to the usual drugs stuff.

And you kind of get the impression that whoever wrote this thinks it's all a bit 'secret squirrel'. And, unusual for an article of this type to list all members of the committee - that's maybe related to the secret squirrel angle 8-[

Bolton: Cabbie loses licence over involvement in illicit tobacco

https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/24 ... t-tobacco/

A taxi driver who was implicated in the sale of illicit tobacco lost their licence according to Bolton Council.

The taxi driver was one of a number to be brought before a licensing committee at the town hall last week.

This was not accessible to the public or to the press and the identities of the individuals were not revealed as a result of an exemption under the Local Government Act.

However the details of the decisions were revealed afterwards and a taxi driver who was implicated in the sale of illicit tobacco lost their licence according to the council.

The decision said: "The applicant pleaded guilty to 10 charges of possession for supply of illegal tobacco and was sentenced to a community order with 300 hours of unpaid work in addition to financial penalties.

"The committee expressed concern the applicant would be working in an environment interacting with vulnerable people."

Meanwhile two applicants were not allowed a licence as a result of traffic offences in the last three years.

One was convicted of driving over the speed limit while the other was convicted of driving while uninsured.

The decision said: "The council’s Statement of Fitness and Suitability in terms of a traffic offence indicates, where a person has a conviction which is less than three years old, then the application would be refused.

"The three year period had not elapsed in relation to this application. The committee found no reason to depart from the guidance."

The licensing committee at the town hall last week consisted of councillors Amy Cowen, Andrea Taylor-Burke, David Chadwick, David Grant, David Wilkinson, Debbie Newall, Maureen Flitcroft, Sean Fielding and Susan Haworth.

Wonder what the speeding offence was, precisely? :?

Interesting because tobacco isn't classed as a narcotic so presumably the revocation is for circumventing customs duty

My stab in the dark guess:
"Going faster than the speed limit in place."

Maybe they were first applications rather than renewals.

Which is not viewed lightly by the courts.

His sentence is the most severe a court can issue other than custody.

Sussex, it certainly reads like the insurance and speeding cases were about new applications rather than renewals.

But it would be interesting to know the numbers as regards the speeding, because of course it's all very arbitrary and box-ticking at times :?
