Post subject:  Is owning your own vehicle cheaper than renting?

I am currently renting a car for £100 p/w plus insurance for £60. I have been thinking of getting my own car recently but I don't know if it works out cheaper. I am thinking of getting a 7 seater such as a Ford galaxy. I was looking on cab direct which have affordable weekly payments but is it worth buying a brand new car over maybe one that is a couple of years old and costs a lot less. I just don't know what my expenses will be with my own car. How much should I expect to spend a month on general maintenance? I just feel I can cut my expenses down with my own car but it's all guesswork and I would really appreciate some advice

the first thing is your own insurance, check with your local broker how much it's gonna be for you. that what you pay for somebody's insurance is over 3k, seems a lot but it depends. your own might be even more, then calculate...

It depends as well what the Vechicle rent covers if ie does it include all maintenance and running costs ?

What car - Model/Year Mileage are you currently getting for £160 per week ?

The £160 covers everything. It is a 56 reg mondeo done 280k miles. I could probably push them for a newer car but thinking a 7 seater will get me more takings

Really? Manchester must be cheap then ha. If I was paying £300 a week I wouldn't see any profit.

Ok so what I'm paying isn't bad then just it's an old car. Can anyone who has there own car shed some light on what the average weekly costs are to run. I.e maintenance, tyres general wear and tear that sort of thing

Putting your own car on will cost approx. £300 a week (rent, insurance, repayments, maintenance, licences etc.)
If you rent it out to another driver you will get back whatever the going rate is round your area, say £150, so it then costs you £150 pw.

plus the added wear and tear on the car cos a jockey wont give a toss about the car, only getting to a job then getting clear....

Say £6k for a car, should get 4 years out of it.
So ....

£30 depreciation a week
which leaves £70 a week for repairs etc

That's the way to think about it !
