Post subject:  The new London Taxi TX4 Euro6 any feedback?

I was chatting to an AA breakdown guy on the M60 at 4am (timing belt, cost £875 eventually) about getting a new London Taxi TX4 and he said "put a table, chair and flask in the boot because you'll spend lots of time on the hard shoulder". His point was that the engine is so flakey it'll breakdown with the regularity of a chiming clock.
Well I've noticed the new lump in the Euro6 is a 2.8L VM Motori engine. This looks promising but the price has gone from a fairly heavy £33k to a very heavy £43k. Checking on the net the new engine looks good except for "sludging" oil gathering at the bottom. Does anyone have any personal experience of this car? What's the feedback? I'd be interested.
I want one and my head says I should plate up a Skoda Octavia but my heart wants to slide gently in to retirement in a new TX4. When I'm scratching around to justify this expense I tell myself the TX4 will hold its value. Any info greatly appreciated.

Not.

The VM Motor is a beautiful engine, it drives brilliantly, but if you look at all the vehicles it has been fitted into in the past you will see that it comes up with the same problem. It has a weak bottom end which results in major expenditure or the engine having to be replaced. It is ok up to 100,000ish miles if you're lucky. If I owned one I would be giving it lots and lots of oil changes and 2 or 3 engine oil flushes at the same time, and of course, use the very best oil you can. I know a few people who have thrown the engine out when it blew up and replaced them with the Nissan 2.7

I had an Epica 2.0ltr diesel, not a bad car but no dealer back up and no diagnostics on airbags or ABS without a 80 mile round trip, parts very expensive and poor supply

Thanks for the feedback, a few people are saying it's great until it goes wrong so I'll hold off until things are clearer.

i had one of the first TX4s.. i shall give you my experience

They are so dam uncomfortable.. fecking horrid do a shift in 1 you know about it
i went through 3 slave cyclinders
clutch is so dam heavy horried.. lasted till 85k though
the engine gets so hot.. i went through 4 water res bottles.. in the summer the water was at boiling point
they drive like a pig,,,
i wouldnt pay 10k for one
drinks fuel...
i suppose the 1 good you have a screen for night work...
i got rid of mine at 90k... i just a feeling it was going to go bang up some point..
thats my review..

choice between skoda and a TX4... go with skoda... TX4 over 30k for a lump steel...
