I went to buy some oil for top-ups as the last dregs from last service were used up last week. I need to use PD diesel, fully synthetic, I was told, no probs says I. Local car shop £19.99 for a litre Local motor factors £30 for 4.5 litres. I'm all for helping the wee businesses, but there's a limit.

Any one know if it's available at a lesser cost?

BTW the car's a Skoda with just under 50k on it, so the warranty is still in place, hence the need to keep it right.

Yes, don't buy into the PD mystery, use any good quality 0-30 5-30 oil, or if you have to abide by VW rules they sell a semi synthetic one for just over £20 but it isn't longlife.


And be warned mixing semi and fully isn't always kind to rubber seals.

Is it the VW 507.00 spec you mean? (5W-30 fully synth?)

VW sell the Castrol stuff for around £15 for a litre, so £20 is way OTT.

£30 for 4.5 litres sounds pretty good.

For top ups Halfords it in 2 litres for £20, which is about the cheapest.

Not sure how much their bigger containers are, but I think it comes in 5 litre packs so there's enough to top up between services, so to that extent good value.

nearly every independant garage round our way buys in vauxhalls fully synthetic or semi synthetic oil for servicing as the deal they do is outstanding,i have used this oil deal for years with my cars

however these are trade club deals

so you need to apply for a free trade club card at your local vauxhall dealer,they do accept taxi drivers

Great deal isn't it, and don't worry about it messing the engine up, the 5-30 goes in everything, and I know a lad in Ireland who fleet uses it in VW cars, not cabs, and 200k without any trouble at all, added to that the trade card takes it down from £55 for 5 litres to around £23, and as said if you buy 3 you get 4 for the same price, appy dayz.

i have run several vectra diesels on this oil over the years to mileages in excess of 350,000 without any engine wear issues,good stuff and very cheap

Steer clear of cheap oil guys, this cheap oil can damage your engine big time. We have a company round our way called Hall and Campy, they collect the waste oil from the garages and refine it then sell it back on to the trade.

the brand was comma, ok it's not castrol or shell etc, but afaik it's a reputable enough company

You can get comma from the motor factor's, or failing that you can get 5 litres from halfords

Change your oil every 10K regardless of if you have the extended service intervals, especially if you have the 2 litre 140 TDI as the turbo is the weak link

I think the price you were quoted for the 4/5 litres was OK, but you should be able to do better than £20 for the litre.

I suspect Halfords own brand is about as cheap as you'll find readily available, but whether or not it's as good as the other brands I don't know.

I was offered that initially, but I get my car serviced every 10k, so decided to go with the £30 one. FYI the prolife is £47.16 for 4.5L at the factors.

This may come as a shock to some people, but, I don't think I've ever put oil in a car and I certainly have never had to buy any other than the sort for cooking
