A pal of mine took his BMW in to have some welding done.They managed to 're-map' the electronics with the welder,so much so that it wont even start.
Its still in the process of being sorted but the quotes for just the parts are enough to make your eyes water.

I had mine done 6 months ago and what a difference hardly any gear changing, and smother engine, and around 50 more miles per tank

I think we need to respect the fact that the maunufacturers spend millions tuning their vehicles for optimum MPG and power output.

not as great as some people would have you believe, an extra 2/3 mpg on my vectra at best but the way fuels going thats going to be worth a fair bit in the next few months on an average of 42-44 mpg my vectra gives i'd be saving 5-7% on my fuel bill of circa £40 quid a day thats oooh circa £3 a day or £90 a month

I've always disconnected the battery leads and alternator,and clamp the earth lead as close as possible to the area being welded. I wouldn't like to weld anywhere near an ECU without disconnecting or removing it.Some people reckon you don't have to,the berk who welded my mates BMW was obviously one of them.

neither the "chips" nor remaps are supposed to be apparent to investigation, i dont know if thats true or not, but either are supposed to notified to your insurers as "modifications"

GBC a remap is undetectable during normal servicing, If you contact superchips they will let you watch the whole process plug in computer download map onto ecu and bobs you auntie, they will even let you try it out and if your not satisfied they will remove it and give you a full refund, you can even get your map on a plug in dongle http://www.mybluefin.co.uk/ so that you can input or remove it yourself

Personally I would be very wary of a superchip that offers both more power AND an increased MPG return. One does not go hand in hand with the other and I think we need to respect the fact that the maunufacturers spend millions tuning their vehicles for optimum MPG and power output. My own personal experience is motorbikes, I had many of mine tuned and from personal experience found NONE to offer an improved MPG after extensive tuning, however the BHP output did increase to varying degrees depending on the original state of tune of a particular engine.

However they only tune to achieve the best MPG and emissions at certain speeds (56mph) because this looks best on paper. They don't tune for optimum performance throughout the speed range or the speed people commonly drive at namely either 30 or 70mph. 'Chipping' I believe gives better performance/economy throughout the speed range.
