It looks like our L.A is trying to pass the cost of "Taxi Marshalls" onto the Hackney drivers. Looking at some of the figures sent to me by the L.A, it looks like the cost at the moment is around 165K P.A  or if you like £3,173.00 per week.

My recollection of this from a few years ago, is that this was either a police or council idea, nothing that the hackneys requested. I am waiting on a F.O.I request for details, but I am sure that it started off with the police picking up the tab, and one of the Marshalls was putting it about that he was working on behalf of the "Home Office". After a while the police started to complain that their budget would not cover it ( a bit like starting up the Traffic Warden department), like ( sorry we have not got time to issue parking tickets)............so someone else creates a budget and starts up another department...............another job the police have not got to do, or a cost to bare.

So I am thinking are they (the police), once again passing the buck, (in this case a matter of law and order)........creating a we need "Taxi Marshall's" situation, (less work for them)...........and then passing the cost on to others.

A general question to all of you out there - who picks up the tab for the "Taxi Marshalls" in your area?

Down here the Police.

I don't think councils have the powers to take funds from vehicle license fees for Taxi Marshalls.

Complain to the District Auditor.

Falkirk Town Centre Management. Marshalls on one rank only. Except Xmas/New Year when extra provision is made for the other town centre rank to get some stewarding.

To my way of thinking this is a "Law and Order" situation. Quite frankly I do not see as to why we should be expected to pick up the tab as 1. It is not our responsibility - that is a police job 2. We do not financially gain from it. The bottom line being is that the customer base would be exactly the same, with or without the Marshalls.

I think that it is important to get as much information from up and down the country re this issue, as our lot (the L.A) are great at using comparisons from other Boroughs i.e tariffs, age of cab etc to suit. Should they manage to get this through (I do not think that they will) then other L.A's will try to do the same.

I think the taxi trade does benefit.

However society benefits the most via improved public safety.

In my view taxi marshals should be paid via a levy on the pubs and clubs.
