Sat front rank early evening and a punter comes up to me and asks will you take me to Elizabeth road ( about 0.9 miles) or do I need to get in the one behind ? I told him he's welcome to get him and took him but during the journey I ascertained that he is one of a growing number of punters who are becoming conditioned to "cherry picking " and expect to have to walk along the rank to find one that will take them in fact it is getting to the stage now that 60 to 70 % of punters take taxis from the back of the rank

I have to wonder whose fault is this ? is it ourselves for not complaining more loudly and aggressively to the council or is it the council for refusing to take action

What exactly would you be complaining about and what exactly do you expect your council to do about it? As far as I am aware the punter can go in any vehicle they choose.

the fact that cherry picking has become so rife on our rank that the punters now expect all drivers are at it !!

Enforce the law.

Is there a law that can force the customer to use a specific car?

No but there is a law for refusing to take a hire off the rank.

if youve just pulled onto the back of a rank and get a fare its a result, the ones at the front may have been waiting an hour

Is it the driver or the customer that is cherry picking though?

No but that isn't the case in this thread, the case at hand is drivers refusing without proper reason, and that's illegal.

This is the crux of the problem customers are assuming they have to go to the back of the rank if they want to go short distance because there is so much of it going on effectively they are being conditioned to it
