Man allegedly attacked taxi driver with machete before setting car on fire, trial heard

A man allegedly attacked a taxi driver with a machete before setting a car on fire, a trial has heard.

Kieran Shortman, 35, and another unknown male, jumped out of a black Peugeot 3008 before hitting Daniel Rothwell with the long knives in Whitefield last year, Manchester Crown Court heard.

The two men attacked Mr Rothwell for a number of minutes before fleeing in the car, it was said.

The Peugeot was found later that day after a hotel in Prestwich reported a car on fire in the carpark, prosecutors said.

Following an examination of the dash cam, it showed a conversation between the occupants of the Peugeot discussing the attack and ‘gloating’ about making it look like a robbery, the court heard.

Mr Shortman, of Bury, denies section 18 wounding with intent; section 20 wounding without intent; having an offensive weapon and arson.

Prosecuting, Colette Renton said the jury will not be hearing from Mr Rothwell, instead the evidence will be presented on an agreed basis between prosecution and defence.

She said that some time between 2.45pm and 3.45pm on September 4 2020, an individual reported that his dash cam had been stolen from his car in Whitefield.

“In the afternoon at around 4pm and assault took place on Daniel Rothwell on Mersey Drive,” Ms Renton said.

“Mr Rothwell was attacked by two males, both had long machete style knives, and got out of a black Peugeot 3008.

“One was wearing shorts and the other one was wearing long trousers.

“The Prosecution say the man in the long trousers is the defendant.

The court was shown CCTV footage of the incident, which showed the two men committing an attack using the machetes to ‘hit’ Mr Rothwell, the prosecutor said.

Mr Rothwell was taken to hospital after witnesses called 999, and he sustained ‘serious injuries’, the court heard.

After the attack, the black Peugeot 3008 was next spotted on CCTV at the Fairways Lodge Hotel in Prestwich, it was said.

The hotel reported that the vehicle was on fire in the car park, Ms Renton said.

“A staff member from the hotel took the dash cam from the car and removed the USB stick to preserve it,” she said.

“It shows the defendant clearly sitting in the car, his face can be seen on the footage.

“It records a conversation amongst the occupants referencing attacking somebody and an intention to set the car on fire.

“It is clear from the contents of the conversation that the people inside the car had the intention to attack somebody and even gloated that they would make it look like a robbery.”

Once the police attended, they examined the car and came to the conclusion that the fire was started in the near-side child seat, but no accelerant had been used, the court heard.

Mr Shortman was later arrested and interviewed and provided no comment to the police, it was said.

Prosecutors said that it is accepted by the defence that Mr Shortman was present in the car, but the issue will be whether he was one of the men who attacked Mr Rothwell.

In the defence case statement, he said he was present in the car, but knew nothing of the attack and instead remained inside the car, jurors were told.

Mr Shortman, of Orion Place, denies the offences.
