Speeding taxi driver jailed for pedestrian's death on the A5121 Derby Road

A cabbie has received a prison sentence after causing the death of a 33-year-old man.

The taxi driver from Burton pleaded guilty to careless driving after he collided with the young pedestrian on the A5121 Derby Road.

Ahsan Ali Chaudhry, 23, of Oak Street, was driving his blue Volkswagen Golf. Thomas Peter Godfrey, who was crossing the road, reports Staffordshire Live.

The incident happened in the early hours of March 12, 2020.

Emergency services arrived but Mr Godfrey was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering fatal injuries.

Staffordshire Police conducted an investigation and found:

Chaudhry had been using his mobile phone via a bluetooth connection at the time of the collision.

He was also travelling in excess of the 40mph speed limit.

The judge said that despite being "hands-free" at the time, Chaudhry was still clearly distracted and his speed was a significant factor in the collision.

PC Jonathan Stant, of the Staffordshire and West Midlands serious collision investigation unit, said: "This collision shows the devastating consequences of driving in excess of the speed limit and while distracted.

"Although using a mobile phone via a hands-free device is not illegal, this incident should act as a reminder to motorists of the devastating impact it can have."

Sentenced at Stafford Crown Court, Chaudhry was told he will serve 15 months in prison.

The defendant has also been banned from driving for 30 months upon his release.

During the early hours many pedestrians tend to float like phantoms out of nowhere and on to the road....yet seldom if ever is it their own carelessness that receives any guilt.

Indeed, and a bit like the recent examples from the likes of Redcar, which seem to lead to hugely different outcomes on broadly similar facts.

I mean, other than a few mph over the limit (if he was well over then the precise speed would probably have been stated) what precisely did the driver do wrong? Yet he's been sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Who'd have guessed that the deceased would be a young person and that the incident happened in the early hours? :-|

Society now demands when someone dies that someone pays a high price.
