using a kettle well that's environmentally friendly not to mention the cost of the coal and manpower ! If they keep that up the line will close again quickly

I think they should make a train up of bicycle powered coaches offer the commuters a 10% discount for pedaling ! Or get the Battery powered emu out of retirement come to think of it didn't network rail spend a ton of money converting an emu to dual battery electric a year or two ago that would be ok as the first mile or two is electrified to charge the batteries

The steam preservations lines are rammed every weekend, every one has been extended and/or re-opened, the WHR from Porthmadog to Caernarfon for 1, the Whitby to Pickering Yorkshire moors, the Llangollen line is now terminating at Corwen, next time a steam excursion comes through your local station take a look, the platforms are jam packed, we have a deep seated love for the old coal burners..

Took this just outside Whitby, have also been on the Somerset line too this year

if it is only coal guzzling kettles that pull in the crowds how come many of these preservation lines run Diesel galas and the trains are often even more packed than on steam days

Many people like trains and there are as many enthusiasts for the diesels and electric trains of the Golden era of British rail True a lot of people have an attraction to things that are no longer relevant to modern day living but if you went back to steam hauled trains and draughty carriages i bet the increasing trend of rail usage would sharply decline !
