An out of town Hackney Carriage dropped a passenger at Lincoln station today. There's an ASLEF drivers strike on with Central trains, so Stagecoach have a bus replacement service on. The buses have taken over the station taxi rank, so there were no other cabs on the station, but the (free :D ) st Mary street rank is adjacent to the station, so I could easily see the out of towners activities.

He'd dropped off, so i was wondering why he was still lurking on the station for so long. He got out, and went into the station, and came out again, and got into his cab. Just about to drive off, when a woman approached him, and he got out and opened a door for her.

I went over to him at this stage and asked him was he seriously going to take the fare?

He told me "It's a booking" (ffs)

I asked the lady who told me it was not.

I advised her to get out, and I would take her to a legal taxi over on the street.

I advised the driver to return to his own manor, and that I had noted his badge and plate number, and that I would be reporting him for illegally plying for hire, which I have done.

Do I think my licensing department, or his, will do anything? Well let us see.

The passenger had never been to Lincoln before, and the very naughty driver would never have found the intended destination as long as he has a hole in his arse.

A £6 fare. Worth risking your badge over? NO. Will I sleep soundly tonight? Oh, YES.

Certainly not. But we are in desperate times.

"There's an ASLEF drivers strike on with Central trains,"

Jimbo I hate to tell you this but it is actually 2012 Central trains ceased to exist several years ago have you not noticed that the trains aren't green now but Rainbow coloured ?

On our line where EAST MIDLANDS TRAINS operate the station almost all the services bar 3 are operated by Cross Country so it doesn't affect us much

Yeah, Edders, whatever.

The only thing that changed was the livery of the rolling stock.

Midland, Central, British Rail, Great Northern. Not really relevant to the thread though.

From the City of Lincoln Licensing.....Silence.

From Nottingham City Council enforcement, my call was returned, telling me the driver had been called in to explain his actions. Took up a few hours of his shift, I hope.

Question for the lower deck lawyers out there. (English law, quiet now, Skippy...)

If a Hackney Carriage driver commits an offence out of his area such as this, under whose juridstiction does it fall?

Could Nottingham prosecute, or would that be Lincoln's job?

Could Nottingham decide a driver was not fit and proper?

I think the plying issue is a local one, but the breach of licensing conditions is a Nottingham one.

Maybe that will be the only good thing some may read in the Law Commission Report, the bit which will allow licensing officials to act against non local vehicles.

I did notice loads of RAF planes in the sky when I was coming through North Hykham in the morning. Is there something going on at Waddington?
