so it's down to Crawley's licensing officers to go there and sort the drivers out.

What authority do Crawley licensing officers have over vehicles licensed elsewhere?

The issue here is Uber drivers waiting outside their licensed area once dropping off at Gatwick (or specifically driving to Gatwick, if they've dropped nearby), hoping to catch a fare back into town. They are waiting outside their licensed area (London), on private airport property, which is what is giving Gatwick Airport police the hump, which is fair enough.

But how would the police know who's got a job and who hasn't?

None.

Out of area licensed PH (i.e. not licensed by Crawley), waiting for a job. They should be going back to their area to wait for a job.

If they've got a pre-book, then that's ok.

As I understand it.

They are doing random/targeted checks on drivers.

They will probably ask what are they doing on airport property. If they're waiting for a pre-book, then will probably ask for the booking details - name of passenger/s, destination, who it was booked with. Then that's fine, they're waiting for a flight to land to pick up passengers from that flight.

If they say they're waiting for a job, and are not a Gatwick Airport cars driver (only they can wait on Gatwick Airport property for a job, I believe), then they're probably told to go away, and fixed penalty notices can be given.

Yes, that's perfectly fine.

Though if you drive for Uber, and have the app on, while you're having your coffee, they will tell you to turn it off (and they can easily watch and wait for you to finish and follow you to see that you leave airport grounds).

As the police have the (passenger) app themselves, they can see where the cars are parked up.

They can also request you, and they can see on the map on the app where you are, so they can easily see where you were when you received their request.

I believe they're mainly targeting Uber drivers simply because they're easy targets - as you can see where they are on the app, and are probably taking business away from Gatwick Airport cars, who've probably complained.

Any further questions/info should be directed @gatwickpolice / www.twitter.com/gatwickpolice I'm sure they can clarify further on their procedures.

What law is that, cos I've read them all time and time again and haven't come across that bugger?

Not being funny here but do the police down there do nothing but chase UBER drivers?

Some sort of airport byelaw I expect that you can't loiter on airport property unless you're a passenger, staff, or waiting for a named passenger - unless you're a gatwick airport cars hackney.

Easy to find and target Uber drivers on the app, by looking where they are on the app.

They are able to make a false request, driver accepts job, so driver's photo, name, and car reg no. is then displayed, and give them fixed penalty notices.

It is also highly likely that Gatwick Airport cars have complained because they're not doing so well now that Uber are on the scene (they charge £90 to Heathrow/central London, whilst Uber charges £62 to central London (flat rate), and approximately £56-£75 to Heathrow ).

So what you are saying is that the police are being used by one company to help their business against another company (drivers)?

I don't know, you have to ask Gatwick Airport police to clarify that.

Seems a coincidence that they've started to take action now, when drivers from other other London based firms have always waited at Gatwick Airport in a virtual rank/plot for a job going back into town, such as Addison Lee, long before Uber existed.
