New taxi rank for universityA taxi rank is to be installed near the University of Leicester.
Last month, the university's Students' Union banned all but one taxi firm, Street Cars, from driving on to the campus in the evening.
It is understood the firm paid about £10,000 for the privilege – a figure neither the union nor company would confirm.
After a series of meetings between the council, drivers and the police, a rank with space for seven cars is to be installed in University Road.
Black cab driver Gurpal Singh Atwal, secretary of the RMT Union in Leicestershire, said: "It is not ideal, but it is better. At the moment, we are not able to get into the university or stop on the road, but this will at least let us stop in the road and give students some alternative.
"I would prefer, however, that customers did not have to cross the road to get to taxis, as I am worried about safety."
The rank will be installed on a temporary basis by the end of the month. After six months it will be reviewed by the council, which will decide whether to make it permanent.
Assistant city mayor councillor Piara Singh Clair said: "We consulted with taxi operators, police, the University of Leicester and ward councillors to come up with a suitable solution. It was agreed a designated taxi rank on University Road was the best way forward and I'm confident this will help resolve the problem."
