National express are to start running buses on a Friday and Saturday night from 11pm to 3.30 am if things go to plan , it will start in May a person who works for the company has said . The plan is to use the bus stop at the G casino as the pick up and drop of point .Fare £3 single journey to Ferry and other Areas .

They've been running for years down here, they've took the Friday night buses off because they are losing money.

They will soon pull them once they realise they will have fast food wrappers and spew to clean up

So thats £12 to the ferry, or Whitfield for 4, how much in a cab??

So if you've got 4 in a cab £10 split 4 ways =£2.50 per person to be dropped of on their streets. A bus will only use the main routes. Many people won't live on the routes the night buses are running on.

They'll pull the plug when they realise they are losing money on a grand scale.

I agree. Only that's not how people think. What they think is, "bus - £2.50, I'll wait for the bus."

Late Night Buses, have completely fu*ked the Edinburgh Taxi Trade. The day of ranks full of people for 3-4 hours at peak times, is a memory. :-| The future . . . :-|

It wasn't just the night buses, it was when they started serving the satellite towns. It decimated our country jobs.

Thing is, buses are heavily subsidised. They pay a pittance for fuel, and they can run a 300 grand bus empty because the rest of the network subsidises them to do so.

Not once, not ever did the trade get together to counter this attack on driver's earnings. They didn't rock the boat, because the owners knew that the drivers would still shell no matter how much their workload was diminished.

We're the architects of our own misfortune.

Yes CC you're probably right. But we could be asking councils to justify these services on cost grounds. We could be alerting the public how the majority using buses during the day are subsidising night services.

We could also be highlighting potential safety issues. You regularly trawl the press, how come you haven't come across late night assaults and skirmishes? There's no crime on night buses? really?

And we could be highlighting how councils like Edinburgh, who spend shedloads of our cash subsidising buses, are working a vested interest.

For example, how could Edinburgh council possibly micro-manage its licensing of taxis and private hire independently in accordance with legislation when all of its decisions are made to support its own transport interests and policies?

You claim to represent the trade CC. What have you done about any of this, or anything else for that matter associated with bus services?

Your right jasbar.

My experience of these schemes are that they're developed by people with vested interests.....they look good on paper but the reality is they cost money.

Many of these schemes transfer the trouble from city centres into suburbs.

Invariably the police have to put units onto buses....because bus drivers complain of abuse.

They run their course and when funding runs out they're dropped.

The input of myself is one of pointing the above out.....it isnt listened to.....because perhaps I aint got my paw into the pot?

There will be a police presence on each coach and anyone acting in a drunk and disorderly fashion won’t be allowed to travel.

"Although the fall in assaults and disorder can't be directly attributed to the late night bus service, I am sure that along with an increased police presence in the town and other initiatives, it was a contributing factor to creating a safer environment."

To ensure that the potential to maximise reassurance, the bus was staffed by a uniform Police presence for each one of the services

A bus service which offers a cheap ride home to late-night revellers in a Kent town has been scrapped just five weeks into its pilot period. Stagecoach said the police presence that was promised on every service has not materialised, jeopardising the safety of staff and passengers
