story updateA taxi driver hit a car and lamppost then overturned his own vehicle after a night out.
Stephen Robertson, 59,
who had been out drinking the previous night, ploughed into the car and kept driving before hitting the lamppost.
Robertson, who was not on duty as a taxi driver at the time of the offence, ended up trapped in his flipped over vehicle, after venturing out to buy some breakfast.
thank god for thatHe appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and admitted dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol, failing to give way at a junction and crashing with a car, a lamppost and overturning his own vehicle.
The offence took place on April 24 last year on the city’s Rosehill Drive and Hilton Drive. Fiscal depute Katie Begg said that at 10.45am the vehicle Robertson crashed into was being driven on Rosehill Drive.
She said: “A pedestrian saw the accused’s vehicle drive on to Rosehill Drive and saw he failed to give way.”
She added that after colliding with the vehicle Robertson drove off without stopping.
Miss Begg said three more witnesses saw the accused’s vehicle overturn and come to rest in the middle of Hilton Drive after hitting and flattening a lamppost on Rosehill Drive.
Robertson, who was trapped in his car, was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and police who travelled with him could smell alcohol on him. A blood specimen returned a reading of 149mcgs in 100 millilitres of blood – the limit being 50mcgs.
Robertson’s defence agent said his client wanted to apologise and was “ashamed and embarrassed” of his actions.
He said by way of explanation – but conceded it was not an “excuse” – that Robertson had been diagnosed with bladder cancer five years ago.
The solicitor said prior to the offence Robertson had been getting new treatment and had been given good news about this.
He said Robertson went on a night out and woke the next morning “feeling good” and decided to go out for some breakfast.
Robertson, whose address was given in court papers as Hammerman Drive, Aberdeen, will return to court next month and Sheriff McCrossan
disqualified him from driving in the interim.
