Taxi and Land Rover crash, taxi hits lamppost, pole crashes down inches from driver’s head

Image
A taxi driver had a lucky escape after a lamppost crashed through the front of his car.

An Aberdeen taxi driver narrowly escaped serious injury when a lamppost crashed into his car, landing just inches away from his seat.

The blue Peugeot Horizon taxi hit the lamppost after colliding with a grey Land Rover Freelander at a busy roundabout at about 11am yesterday.

The pole toppled into the overturned taxi, tearing through the engine.

The accident happened at the roundabout where Rosehill Drive meets Hilton Drive, with the car blocking the middle of the road.

Meanwhile, the Land Rover continued up Rosehill Drive before coming to a stop at a wall, a few feet from the Co-Op.

The woman driving the vehicle was unscathed, with the rear bumper bearing the brunt of the collision and falling onto the road.

Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene.

Nine firefighters smashed open the taxi windscreen and helped free the motorist from the car.

The crews left the scene at about 11.40am after making the scene safe.

Several onlookers stood and watched as about six police officers taped off the area around the taxi and directed traffic through the roundabout.

Traffic began to build up as police were forced to close off part of Hilton Drive and Hilton Street.

Meanwhile, another pair of officers helped the woman driving the Land Rover, who did not require medical treatment.

The taxi driver was later taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he was treated for minor injuries.

Officers remained at the scene till just after 1pm to allow council teams to remove the damaged vehicle.

story update

A taxi driver hit a car and lamppost then overturned his own vehicle after a night out.

Stephen Robertson, 59, who had been out drinking the previous night, ploughed into the car and kept driving before hitting the lamppost.

Robertson, who was not on duty as a taxi driver at the time of the offence, ended up trapped in his flipped over vehicle, after venturing out to buy some breakfast.

thank god for that

He appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and admitted dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol, failing to give way at a junction and crashing with a car, a lamppost and overturning his own vehicle.

The offence took place on April 24 last year on the city’s Rosehill Drive and Hilton Drive. Fiscal depute Katie Begg said that at 10.45am the vehicle Robertson crashed into was being driven on Rosehill Drive.

She said: “A pedestrian saw the accused’s vehicle drive on to Rosehill Drive and saw he failed to give way.”

She added that after colliding with the vehicle Robertson drove off without stopping.

Miss Begg said three more witnesses saw the accused’s vehicle overturn and come to rest in the middle of Hilton Drive after hitting and flattening a lamppost on Rosehill Drive.

Robertson, who was trapped in his car, was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and police who travelled with him could smell alcohol on him. A blood specimen returned a reading of 149mcgs in 100 millilitres of blood – the limit being 50mcgs.

Robertson’s defence agent said his client wanted to apologise and was “ashamed and embarrassed” of his actions.

He said by way of explanation – but conceded it was not an “excuse” – that Robertson had been diagnosed with bladder cancer five years ago.

The solicitor said prior to the offence Robertson had been getting new treatment and had been given good news about this.

He said Robertson went on a night out and woke the next morning “feeling good” and decided to go out for some breakfast.

Robertson, whose address was given in court papers as Hammerman Drive, Aberdeen, will return to court next month and Sheriff McCrossan disqualified him from driving in the interim.

what an utter and total twonk !!!!!

update 153

A taxi driver who crashed into a lamppost and overturned his car while under the influence of alcohol today spoke of his regret.

Stephen Robertson, 59, had to be cut free from his vehicle after the crash, which happened the day after a night out.

Robertson, who was not working as a taxi driver at the time of the offence, was banned from driving for 16 months and fined £1,250 when he appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court for sentencing.

He previously admitted dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol, failing to give way at a junction and crashing with a car, a lamppost and overturning his own vehicle.

The offence took place on April 24 last year on the city’s Rosehill Drive and Hilton Drive.

Stephen Robertson’s taxi flipped over during the crash in Aberdeen last April.
Speaking to the Evening Express following the court case, Robertson said he was sorry for the crash.

He said: “I accept the responsibility for being stupid. I’m grateful nobody was injured. It was a next day incident.

“I definitely regret what happened. I went for a drink the night before, took my medication in the morning and went for my breakfast to McDonald’s. I was knocked unconscious and I can remember being in the place for breakfast but can’t remember anything after that.

“I would seriously say to people don’t mix alcohol with medication. It threw me over the top.

“It’s a lesson learned for me, and it ruined me.”

His defence agent previously told the court that Robertson, whose address was given in court as Hammerman Drive, Aberdeen, had battled cancer and went on the night out after receiving good news about his treatment.

Speaking during his sentencing hearing the solicitor said that a background report into Robertson had been in “positive terms”.

Sheriff Christine McCrossan told Robertson: “Last time I heard the facts – it was not a very good tale of what happened that day.”

Robertson will also have to sit an extended driving test before getting his licence back.
