Telegraph, BBC Breakfast News, et al...

Britains 195,000 white van men are not normally known for their concern for the environment. But the government is prepared to spend £1.3 million teaching themhow to do their bit for the country's eco-system by giving them special driving lessons. The government is paying for 200 instructors to spread the gospel of greener motoring. The first 3,500 van drivers to enlist on the scheme will get their lessons free. Others will have to pay for the one-day course-a combination of classroom work and on-the-road training-costing between £50 and £100. They will be taught how to use their gears better, avoiding over revving the engine and keeping a better distance from the car in front by not dabbing at the brakes. (?)

Well, it goes on, blah blah, you get the picture, glad I don't drive around in a (converted) Van

You are spot on there

I wonder if the lessons will be available to all the 'white van man' white taxi-vans here in Renfrewshire ? (Paisley/Glasgow Airport)

And would it make you a worse driver if you drove an E7? Are drivers of E7s in other manors worse drivers than you? :-k

What they are though is richer.

Well, a man hears what he wants to hear, and disregards the rest.

But at least he has a choice if he wants to hear it, unlike the lads in London who have no choice.

I don't know about you guys but I would argue that 'white van man' & all the other professional drivers ie. taxi, bus & HGV drivers all the best on ther road

They are on the highways all the time & as a result their driving skills improve no end espcially compared to the part time road users that are the general public

You only have to look at the driving skills (or loack of them) the general public have during rush hours such as tail gaiting, bad lane disipline (my pet hate !) & incorrect lane use

What do you think ?

For all those white van drivers who are employed rather than self employed then they can look forward to a day off for the training ! Is this really a good investment of tax payers money !

Difficult to tell, but there's certainly plently so-called professional drivers who do just that as well.

Let's face it, some of the worst drivers on the road have been driving taxis for years :?
