No excuse if the driver did assault the passenger, but talk about trying to downplay why the driver may have kicked off

Officers are investigating an incident in which a Derbyshire man fell asleep in a taxi home and reported being assaulted.

The Derbyshire Dales Police Team are investigating after a 29-year-old man was reportedly assaulted by a taxi driver, who was driving him back to Ashbourne after a night out in Manchester.

The alleged victim had fallen asleep in the front passenger seat during the journey, and after waking up, realised he was close to home and ran the rest of the way.

The incident happened sometime between 3.30am and 4.00am on August 29, and officers have been following several lines of enquiry since.

They are keen to speak with the man pictured, as it is believed he could assist with enquiries. It is thought the man may come from the Manchester area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Derbyshire Police using one of the following methods, quoting reference number 22*509895:

Tried to do a runner after a 50-mile job at 4.00am?

As I said, no excuse for assault, but I suspect the scenario is a bit less one-sided than it appears in the article [-(

it can be a nightmare when they fall asleep and wake up again as they lose orientation

But this does sound like someone is being economical with the truth

The MEN has rehashed this and, funnily enough, doesn't even mention the alleged victim running off when he 'realised he was close to home' :-o

Police investigating after man 'assaulted by taxi driver' on way home from night out release picture of person they want to speak to

The 29-year-old was travelling home to the Peak District when he was attacked

Police are appealing for the public's help after a man was allegedly attacked by a taxi driver on the way home from a night out in Manchester. The 29-year-old reported he'd been assaulted as he travelled back to Ashbourne in the Peak District.

Police in Derbyshire have released an image of a man they'd like to speak to in connection with the investigation. The attack took place between 3.30am and 4.30am on August 29.

It's thought the man pictured may come from Manchester. A spokesperson for Derbyshire Dales Police said: "Officers have been following several lines of enquiry since it was reported to us. They are keen to speak with the man pictured, as it is believed he could assist with their enquiries.

"It is thought the man may come from the Manchester area. Do you recognise him?"

Anyone with information is asked to contact police quoting reference 22*509895 via direct message on Twitter or Facebook or by calling 101 or Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.

On the other hand, I found the source of the above articles, which seems to be a series of Tweets on the Derbyshire Dales Police account :-o

Here's the precise words as posted. There's a very subtle difference to the original article at the top of the thread. Anyone notice it? :-k

(This isn't the whole lot - the rest is the reference to the driver, and how to contact police etc etc.)

We have released an image of a man we would like to speak to about an assault in a taxi.

A 29-year-old man who had been on a night out in #Manchester and got a taxi back to his home in the #Ashbourne area reported being assaulted by the taxi driver, a man, after falling asleep in the front passenger seat during his journey home.

The victim got out of the taxi, realising he was close to home, and ran the rest of the way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the difference is just a couple of words - the Tweet says that the assault took place *in* the taxi.

That wasn't explicitly made clear in the original article. Not sure what others thought of it, but I kind of got the impression that it probably happened outside the taxi and it happened because the punter had decided to run off once he realised he was close to home :-o

So it may in fact be that the assault took place in the cab, and that was why the punter then decided to run home. And who would blame him?

But if that was the case, then no clear rationale for the assault, but of course we don't know precisely what went on. It may have even been a sexual thing, which would of course be reasonably predictable if the victim had been a sleeping female :?

Anyway, that's probably enough speculating for now. And it's maybe a taxi driver thing that the public wouldn't notice, but the original article definitely gave me the impression that the punter had done a runner [-(

And I'm sure all of us have had drunk punters who have fallen asleep, but won't wake up again

Well recall one a few years ago, who didn't seem too drunk, but he fell asleep, and when we got to his village he just wouldn't wake up. I was shaking him and shouting, but no response. After about twenty minutes, I fished out his phone, and managed to phone his dad, who was in a house nearby (I didn't know the precise address, but it was quite a small village, so his house was never going to be too far away.)

Anyway, the dad appeared, and ended up slapping the guy quite hard, to a degree that would easily have reached the criminal assault threshold, I'd guess. He eventually woke up, and luckily no damage seemed to have been done, and it all seemed to end well.

But I'm wondering if the Derbyshire case may have been something similar, and the punter maybe misconstrued what was happening (as Edders says, he would have been disorientated and confused on waking up), so jumped out of the cab and scarpered.

Anyway, it's about time people on here stopped speculating about live criminal investigations

I suspect they will find the driver, and I suspect the truth is nothing like what is being alleged.

But maybe this is another reason why in chunks of our country you can’t get a cab late at night.
