Economics of the initial purchase are rarely considered.
What matters to the professional driver is the economy of running the vehicle. The considerations, in no particular order are, insurance, fuel economy, servicing costs, tyre cost, comfort, prestige to name just a few.
Then we look at "personal" transport as the investment of any vehicle is generally the second biggest investment we all make, the vehicle we use for work also becomes the family car in many cases.
When all these things are considered, many drivers choose a saloon and where available as a HC their numbers are always restricted so if a driver wants one they still have to pay the premium.
This trade is not as black and white as you make out, but you wouldn't know that would you.
