Age has nothing to do with it. If your working income is less than a certain amount then you are eligible ;

•if you have one child it is £26,000
•if you have two children it is £32,200
•if you're single without children it is £13,000
•if you’re in a couple without children it is £18,000

Amounts you can get vary depending on income (the less you earn below the limits the more you get) and marriage/child status but as an example a single person with no children will get between £0 if you earn £13,000 p.a. up to a maximum of around £2,400 if you only earn about £6,500 p.a.

Applying is dead easy and quick, one of the easiest official forms I've ever had to fill in, did it a couple of years back and now get about £30 a week. Could have claimed before that but didn't know about it so lost out on several years payments so it's worth checking to see if you qualify even if you think you don't.

And be careful when submitting a claim as it's administered by HMRC and they most likely cross-reference your tax return so make sure the figures match ! :roll:

Thanks for the further explanation there Sasha. My accountant, a retired military man, told me about this a few years back.

He got WTC when he got pensioned out of the army as he took a low-paid part time job as a bookkeeper.

You'd be surprised how quiet the government keeps this benefit as most cabbies should be on it if they knew about it! Which is why I question some of the local drivers who work all hours and pay tax. work less and let the taxman pay YOU!!
