PRIVATE HIRE CAR BLOWN UP IN TAXI TURF WAR

A TAXI driver caught up in a vicious turf war has had his car firebombed by rivals.

Private hire driver Eddie Watson was woken in the early hours to the sound of a huge explosion outside his home.

When he raced downstairs he found his taxi had been destroyed.

A gang had nailed a massive firework to a plank of wood, lit it and thrown it through the side window of his car, which was totally destroyed in the blast and ensuing blaze.

Armed police and Army bomb disposal experts were called to the scene on Monday as stunned neighbours looked on.

It is believed Watson upset a gang which recently moved into the south side of Glasgow.

Watson, who until recently worked as a driver for Crookfur Cars in the south of the city, is thought to have fallen foul of the thugs by claiming he was going to set up his own business.

Crookfur Cars was recently sold by career criminal Paul Johnston to a syndicate including champion boxer Barry Hughes.

Watson was quizzed at length by CID officers.

One local said: 'It's all about control. This gang does not want anyone operating on their patch and that was a warning to Watson to reconsider his career choice.

'I think from the state of him afterwards that is exactly what he will be doing.

'It's getting worse, the people responsible are upping the stakes and I don't know if they are capable of stopping.'

A police spokeswoman confirmed an explosive device had been thrown through a window into Watson's car and said inquiries were continuing.

Watson was not available to comment.

In January, we told how boxing champ Hughes was at the centre of Scotland's biggest police probe into dirty money from Scotland's £1billion-ayear drugs trade.

Hughes, 25, was linked to an investigation by police who last week froze £3million in assets belonging to millionaire Russell Stirton.

Hughes, formerly Scotland's No 1 lightweight boxer, has a luxury lifestyle but insists he made his money through car sales and property deals.
