Taxi Driver Online

A friend of mine is a Hackney in a very rural area. He says that he often takes fares outside his area to drop off. But always gets asked to pick up in the out of town area to take back to his own town centre.
So what he does is offer a free ride to the county border and then puts his meter on...Is this legal. He explains beforehand what he is doing to the punters, Who should be happy as they get a reduced fare. But the local taxi firms would get a bit miffed I would think..But he states everything is low key in this part of the world.

if he got them to ring his office and the job was entered in a log when taken , before they stepped into his vehicle, probably yes, but if we nailed every legal/illegal and technical aspect of every rule and regulation we could easily die of old age and poverty before turning a wheel.

how about this then...

a local firm (hacks and PH mixed fleet) have a base, its at the entrance to a small multi-storey car park.

the cars sit either outside on double yellows (the TW arent fazzed about that) or inside in the public car parking area.

joe public pass by, tell me, are the signwritten PH vehicles touting? arent the PH vehicles in contarvention of the ops licence "whilst waiting for work" but being in a car park?....which is public.

the hacks arent on a rank, are they in the wrong too?

How do they ask? Do they phone him direct on his mobile? Back order while in his cab? Ask on the street?
I don't see this making any difference either way.

He drops off at a busy pub, his cab is sign writen and it is ovious by his roof light and his plate where he comes from as it is only 8 miles from this other town but just outside his area. They all want to go to the clubs.
So is it legal or not.. he does not have a office as he is owner driver hackney...so they cant ring and pre book

Yes it is legal cos there is no law saying a hackney carriage, which if we remember is always a hackney carriage no matter where the vehicle is, needs an operator's license to take work.

Be that rank, street, radio, phone, web etc etc.

then again, both the hacks and the PH vehicles are sat together on double yellows but theres only about 6 rank places in the town anyway

If it's not prebooked and picked up outside a pub which isn't in his licensed area then I would say no it is not legal.

I'm not having a pop at the drivers, just giving my view about the legality of the situation.

TBH I think many cab drivers are stark raving mad by not waiting for work where work is waiting for a cab.

Not usually something PH suffer with.
