Hi to all fellow taxi drivers!

I would like to ask a few questions and would be grateful for others thoughts!

I have been a taxi driver for over 8 years and have seen most things and after all that time I have finally got fed up with getting ripped off by the operators who increase the radio hire and flood the office with drivers.

I have thought about going alone and did for a short while when I had a Peugeot Eurocab which I got from Ca Direct. Things didnt go too great as when I first had the cab the £1500 I had saved up to tied me over went on repairs and when I told Cab Direct they said it was not covered under warranty even though it was engine troubles! Charming and I will never recommend them or use them again. Anyway, after starting by myself my gf had a car accident after a female taxi driver pulled out of a side junction and so needing more money to pay the mortgage I had to go back to an office.

Now this was last year and I am back driving a Mondeo but would like to start out on my own again. I went to look at a unit the other day, not too great with paint peeling on the outside walls and the interior looking a bit rough, but there would be no walk in trade and as I build work I would just have a phone in there set to divert to my mobile. The spanner comes from my partner who says that it is terrible and to wait and look some more, but the rent and rates come to £41 per week and I have so far found no where cheaper, so what do you guys think? Should I disobey the other half and go for it or wait?

Are you private hire or hackney?
Why do you need an office, can't you use your home address?
If you need an office, do you know anyone who would "rent" you a corner of their office so that you can put a phone line in and use call divert?

Hi Grandad,

In reply I am a private hire driver. The problem in using my home is that I need to have planning consent to run it as a taxi office, also where I live is close to town but rural as there are only 3 neighbours where I live and I know 2 of those will object so it is highly unlikely that I will get consent.

I have no idea of any one who would be able to rent me part of there office so it seems that I need to find premises somewhere cheap and cheerful!

Has anyone here got any ideas how to get my number out in regards to advertising on a budget?

Cheers

Am afraid to run as an operator from home you need planning, personally I just think thats its just another way of making money!

When I enquired about an operators licence from home I was told that I needed planning which costs over £300 if I remember right, a nice little earner for the council.

I moved house 2 years ago and I had planning on that one for 1 car (namely me!) and one neighbour kicked up a hell of a fuss and said I would have hundreds on cars on my drive!

I have not applied for it here due to where I live and I know I will upset the neighbours and I dont want a repeat from my last house!

They may object but if you are only running your own car from your own home it shouldn't really matter.

If you were going to have dozens of cars parked up, and noisy drivers chatting all night then fair enough, but I doubt you are.

Apply and see what happens.

Pay some student to go around your area with flyers.

I run hacks from home and do not have planing permission, I have just phoned a bud of mine who runs a PH business from home and he does not have planing permission and was never required to do so.

Do things vary from area to area?

i need CONSENT from my LA to be a PH operator from home (HA rented) but was told upto 2 vehicles theyve never refused, i think a hackney plate wouldnt need consent as the theory is a hackney sits on a rank waiting for work.

the permission is not a planning issue as such, if i cant get it ill rent a unit, stick a mast up and rent radios out at £65 a week and feed my own cars....

never seen that done though personally

FTF

if you understand

Right here is the situation so far!

I have deceided to cut down on costs and not go for premises at this time as the one I looked at would be £50 per week and I would need planning on it. So, I thought I would get planning on my house to run 2 taxis and use the £50 per week to buy myself an 8 seater minibus, simple eh!

But, when it comes to Wrexham concil things are never easy! Now I have to have planning on my house to operate 1 vehicle which according to the council the give the go ahead and keep an eye on it for 12 months and if things ok you have to re apply. Now, because I want 2 vehicles the council says it is less likely to grant permission even though it is only me driving the 2 vehicles, obviously not at the same time might I add!

So, I have now put together a long letter of points as to why I should be allowed to run 2 vehicles from my house and I will now have to wait for up to 8 weeks to find out one way or the other! If its refused I will reapply for 1 vehicle and I will be back to square 1.

So here I am trying to make a living, not disrupting anyone and the council trys to make things hard, makes me think about giving up and becoming a scrounger and not work again and claim all the benefits I can!! Althought I dont have the heart to do that!

Hands up who hates council idiots who think they are fantastic cos they work for the council!

As a side note, I had a wasps nest in my shed, the council charges £36 to get rid of it but free if you rent, so I bought some wasp killer spray for £1.98 and cleaned the nest and disposed of it for £1.98! What was I saying about giving up and becoming a scrounger?!!!!!

mr wrexham, have you asked the local gestapo, sorry, council if you need PP to operate as a hackney, just to see what they say

some councils have a PH "ops licence" - nice extra earner for sod all, but not for hackney's

youd probably need a meter fitting and comply with colours of vehicles (if theyeve thought of that one) but their answer would be interesting

I dont need to ask the local idiots in charge if I can oerate a hackney as I used to operate one from my home without planning last year!

It is really stupid that I could in theory go out and buy say 10 hackneys and park them all over my property and run them fom the internet, a phone and from the ranks and that would not be a problem. But if I want to operate 2 private hire vehicles from my house then I need planning and its a gamble as to whether I will get it!

Regradless of the gamble I am going to apply for 2 vehicles today and will have to wait about 8 weeks to find out! All I want to do is make a living and the council make it so damn hard.

As citizen smith would say "Power to the People" or "Power to the Taxi Drivers" !!! :D
