I understand Basildon allow mobile phone numbers on business cards, that would suggest that some councils do and some don't? The subject is interesting but not nearly as interesting as it would be if it ever went to court.

Birmingham ask for the following.

One copy of all business cards, letterheads, plaques and any other material intended to be used to publicise or advertise the operation.

All telephone numbers intended to be used to invite bookings and the addresses to which each one relates, ie. The first point of reception for each call. Please provide documentation from your telephone provider detailing the above, which must be in the name of the applicant/licencee.

Regards

JD

I don't know about that but the mobile phone issue is one which the 1976 act didn't cater for. In the absence of legislation only the courts can determine the legalities of private hire operators and the issue involving mobile phones. I wouldn't worry too much because this meeting of minds bunch has the same fate planned for all hackney carriage drivers.

going deeper into technology, if i used a PDA logged onto the GPRS service, and someone sent an email booking, that couldnt be claimed to be a booking taken "via a mobile phone number"

im not so sure about the "text a taxi" services.....

Id never advertise my purely Business mobile number on a Business card, I do however advertise my Contact number on my Business card..who knows..old Aunty Aggie might need to get in touch in a hurry.

There can be no law advertising your contactble Mobile number on a card that you hand out. its not like your stating that its a 100% bookings only Number..just stick to the hands free and Avoid taking any Taxi Licensing Authotity staff as passengers...

Only if you are a hackney carriage driver and if the meeting of minds bunch have their way you won't even be able to do that and neither will hackney drivers in London and Scotland, if they are outside their legislative area.

walked past the only rank in town today (bout 6 spaces, a hackney was sitting in the bus station in a "coaches only" section) and a row of white hackney saloons from 1 firm all had the mobile nuber on them...

Some would say that's progress but others would no doubt ask, "why does a private hire operator who can only take bookings from a fixed address need a mobile phone number? A court might say that as long as the booking takes place in the registered operating environment then it is perfectly legal but I wouldn't like to second guess what a court might say.

What do you think?

from the hackney plating regs....

Quote:
9.5. Under no circumstances may a mobile phone number be used or advertised on any part of the vehicle or business card in order to invite or accept bookings.

yet there are hackney's on the rank with ONLY a mobile number on them....
