A Saloon PH pulls on to the station forecourt, right in front of the official taxi rank, waitiing for a legitimate pick up. His plate states he is licenced to carry four persons. Four adults and one child approach him, and start getting into his car. When he is advised by a Hackney driver (of a five seater) that he is overloading, he claims that he can carry four plus a "babe in arms". The child was a toddler, but a human toddler, not an alien, so therefore he drove away with five persons on board. This is not the "grey area" that some would claim, as he is about to find out.

Is this an example of the bad name PH bring upon themselves? He should have refused the job, and called up a bigger vehicle, but times are hard, and for this idiot, about to get harder.

I agree. We had this same discussion on our local forum a while back. 4 persons is 4 persons of any age.

I don't think we should lose sight of the fact that the practice of overloading is not exclusive to some private hire drivers, many hackney carriage drivers are also guilty of the practice.

No, but it is an example of that driver bringing a bad name on himself.

Very true. I think this sort of stupidity can be found in both camps.

And 24 hours later, a saloon from the same company pulled up at the same spot to pick up 3 adults and 2 children. It was again pointed out to him he would be overloading, and he declined the job and called up a bigger vehicle. Well done him.

Passengers not best pleased though, called the hack driver a "cooking funt" nice girl, she kisses her mother with that mouth.

Amazing how many people ring up to book airport travel for say 4/6/8 passengers and when you turn up at 0400hrs there is a baby or toddler as well. I tell them straight, no travel on your knee, use a seat or booster seat (which I will store foc ) and which adult is not going. They do seem to be the type who ring round for the chaepest quote then forget to book and have to do it at the last minute or claim they have booked but have no confirmation etc.
Even had one woman who didn't mention the kid to save £5. Told her in a loud enough voice for the neighbours to hear that her child's life was not worth £2.50 each way!! :x ](*,)

I always tell them the same thing. My badge and livelyhood are worth more to me than any fare (or offers of a big tip).

these are the same people you see in lane 2 of the motorway, in a pajero with baby on mums lap in the front seat, and no-one has a seat belt on except the driver, still at least the drivers safe

and mum and dad are getting through 40 fags an hour, while the kids in the back are slowly choking....

oh, and dads/driver has his phone to his ear

why do the cops never see this if i can

To be fair to the ph company concerned, and their operators, you can bet odds on that when the punter phoned for a car, neither said there were five passengers. It's down to the drivers to refuse to overload, and call up a bigger vehicle. One driver did refuse, and good for him. The other is going to have to explain himself to the licencing dept.
