Disabled or not..If the person in question is Potential Health Issue to other users of the Vehicle it should be at the drivers Discretion as to whether its acceptable or not to take her as a hire. all that Disabilty awareness type Groups ask is that people with disabilities are Treated as equals and along with that equality comes the responsiblity to accept the same rules as the more abled bodied adhere to. if the lady is unfit to to travel through her inabilty to attain a reasonable level of personal hygiene , God knows she may spread Typhus or any Number of Contageous diseases through her faecus that I suggest she should be using the NHS Ambulances or some Specialist Voluntary Transport group that can Handle the More severely Issued, especiallly the Incontinent and those with little or no bowel control. Even Hospitals handling people with these issues would have special beds and specialist units and staff on hand to assist with their extra needs, they also have the Right to refuse Treatment if their is a risk to others Especially there Staff.

It would be unfair for any Taxi to be forced to carry such a person that after a £5.00 fare would need a New Seat or the vehicle professionally Hygenically Cleaned after each journey...considering they Dont get Charitable Contributions such as the Mobilty wheels type people do.

I reckon the council that Says they Could revoke a licence for Not accepting this Individual are Likely to lose the argument in a case of an appeal if it was proved that her Lack of Hygeine (be it her Own fault or Not) would be Detrimental to the Health of the General Public and all other Vehicle users because it would Contravene the Public health act.

Hang on a minute, at what point has it been said that this lady has lost control of her bodily functions? The original post just said personal hygene which probably means that she smells a bit not that she has [edited by admin] herself.

It's amazing how the sensitivity of our drivers' noses varies inversely with the length of the job!! :?

If I don't get my price for a road job, then they don't travel in my cab.

I always tell them to go & find the 'Busy Fool' that will do the job for the peanuts they want to pay.

on our rank we have a woman that uses us regularly but she really has a hygiene problem in fact three of the drivers have been physically sick when we approached the licensing committee and asked if we could refuse her on the grounds of how bad she was they said no and we could get our license revoked has any body come across this before

I think that your wheelchair lady has the following problem & if she does, there is nothing that she can do about it, except for the last paragraph.

Sorry about the content but you did ask.

As for not taking her, there must be some 'belt & braces' way of refusing her, but you really need to be sure before you do.

Colostomy is a surgical procedure that involves connecting a part of the colon onto the anterior abdominal wall, leaving the patient with an opening on the abdomen called a stoma. In a colostomy, the stoma is formed from the end of the large intestine, which is drawn out through the incision and sutured to the skin. After a colostomy, feces leave the patient's body through the abdomen. A colostomy may be permanent or temporary, depending on the reasons for its use.

Placement of the stoma on the abdomen can occur at any location along the colon, the majority being on the lower left side near or in the sigmoid colon, other locations include; the ascending, transverse, and descending sections of the colon. Colostomy surgery that can be planned ahead often has a higher rate of long-term success than those done in emergency surgery.

People with colostomies who have ostomies of the sigmoid colon or descending colon may have the option of irrigation, which allows for the person to not wear a pouch, but rather just a gauze cap over the stoma, and to schedule irrigation for times that are convenient. To irrigate, a catheter is placed inside the stoma, and flushed with water, which allows the feces to come out of the body into an irrigation sleeve. Most colostomates irrigate once a day or every other day, though this depends on the person, their food intake, and their health.

Colostomies are viewed negatively due to the misconception that it is difficult to hide the pouch and the smell of feces, or to keep the pouch securely attached. However, modern colostomy pouches are well-designed, odor-proof, and allow stoma patients to continue normal activities. Latex-free tape is available for ensuring a secure attachment. People with colostomies must wear an ostomy pouching system to collect intestinal waste. Ordinarily the pouch must be emptied or changed several times a day depending on the frequency of activity; in general the further from the anus the ostomy is located the greater the output and more frequent the need to empty or change the pouch.

PS We also have these passengers, but thankfully very, very occasionally.
