I am looking to get my first 8 seater minibus and after asking on this forum and looking around I came to the conclusion that I either get a Ford Tourneo or a VW Transporter.

Now considering that I need plenty of luggage space I think the Ford Tourneo would be the better choice, however a spanner has been thrown into the works!!

I saw a driver at the office who I have never seen before and he has an '07' Tourneo and I asked what it was like? He responded by saying that it is terrible and a pile of junk dont buy one! He said that he has been having lots of problems since he has had it but luckily they have been fixed under warranty. He reckons that a Ford Transit would be a better choice, but have since been told they are the same as the Tourneo! I know that you are going to have some problems with any vehicle but this chap reckons he has had loads and that they are a terrible vehicle.

Has anyone had any problems or know anyone who have had any problems with a Ford Tourneo?

Your thoughts and views are greatly appreciated.

the TRANSIT that the tourneo is based on should be the best you could hope for as a base for the MPV, there are millions on the road, the Tdci engine has several known faults, from the EGR valve to the injectors, if your man thinks his transit was bad he should try a citroen relay like i had, THEN he would know real pain...absolute junk.

the VW and mercs should be bullet proof but cost because of it, and the new shapes (sprinter/crafter) have had reliability problems, they are also worso on fuel than the previous models.

my 53 reg 311cdi 4.2mtr would give me 32 mpg, new models are down in the 27mpg area

5 miles less per gallon at todays prices is bad news.

it can also depend who does the conversions when it comes to fittings and trim problems, tourneos are al done in belguim i thought


(BTW, typing "t.ranny" in a post (with no fullstop) and it gets altered to "bald", so we now what bald men really are now then!)

The chap I spoke to said he had a few problems with his tourneo and one of them being the EGR valve!

He has also told he the chap who owned the Tourneo from new hammered it from day one until he sold it to him at about 18,000 miles! He has also said the original owner was putting the cheapest oil into the engine and so was he until he was told it was the wrong oil. So my thoughts are maybe this is why he is having some of the problems he has been having?

I was told that the Tourneo is basically a Transit in a suit and that the transits are great vehicles which leads me to think these are good too and maybe he has just been unlucky?

You can be unlucky in any vehicle choice but I just want to reduce my odds of getting a bad 'un!!

doesn't the tourneo have the same engine as the T X 2 and the same stupid clutch that is for ever going wrong...ie new starter motor. new flywheel ringear and clutch every 40,000 miles, oyes and £400 a pop every time the timing chain decides to play up :shock:

But didn't it all work ok on the tourneo/transit?

Spinning it round and making it real wheel drive was what caused the problems.

the EGR valve is a irritattion, needs cleaning, can be blanked off.

the DMF (dual mass flywheel) is a cushioned flywheel tp absorb the 300+ nm of torque the tdci engine (a chain cam drive btw, no cambelts).

the tdci engines require use of a 5w-30 engine oil like magnatec

timing chains can outlast the car/bus/van - with regular servicing

clean oil is like oxygenated blood to an engine

mines been clocked, it should read 184,000 not 84,000
