A young woman was raped by the driver of what she thought was a private hire taxi in a "terrifying ordeal", police police police said today.

The 26-year-old woman got into the vehicle after leaving the Hudson Hotel on Hope Street in the west end of Edinburgh.

She was driven from there to Brunstane Road South, where the man is believed believed believed to have assaulted her within the car.

Rape?

Call me a cynic!

Why do PH get so much Stick...if she jumped into a Vehicle thinking it was PH she mustve booked it before hand....more likely she got into what she thought was an HC stopped at the roadside. So in the PH versus HC argument both are just as likely to fall foul of this kind sicko's pick up trick as the other is.

Sober or Drunk it was a Mistake by this lady. Anyone determined enough to Pick up an Innocent victim to abuse is im sure quite Capable of and Intellegent enough to buy or steal a Taxi roof sign to further his perverted pursuit. so please lay off us PH guys. 99.9 percent of us are decent guys trying to earn a crust to feed the family just like HC guys are. Ive never Phlimped, Hawked, Loitered, Plied for illegal business....Nor I guess have the Vast majority of PH drivers. its a Hardcore minority of PH, Maybe even Unlicenced Boy racers or chancers that you want to vent your spleen at.

so please..give us Chaps a break.

Don't take it personally, it's just rats feeding on rats. A typical working class mentality. You often find that PH drivers, who go on to pass the knowledge end up being the worst offenders. They just need to feel good about themselves, and by making someone a victim is the only way they know how.

Signage shouldn't matter one iota.
Phone for a PHV and get a reg number.

And all customer late at night are going to write down the correct details? :?

If all PH in Edinburgh had bundles of signage this lady, if she did, would never have got into an unmarked vehicle.

spot on sussex other councils in scotland let there ph have signage but good old CEC just want a plate on the front and back of the motor

IMO they are to blame as well as the so called taxi groups (and there back handers or was it free taxis for there pals) here who think by marking PH with company numbers and "this car can only be Pre booked" will destroy there trade bunch of nuts

they wont let the PH companys put the cars call sighns on the back window but its ok for hacks to do this maybe this sad incident will make them wake up and think of public safety

And I bet the other councils have a higher rate of illegal pickups !!!
Thats right chipper blame everybody else ?
If any blame is to be dished out has has to fall at the door of the PH ! If the public weren't so used to illegal pickups these incidents would not happen ! Pervs find a weakness and exploit it !

As for signage, lets revert to how it was supposed to be....
No plates exterior or interior. and NO RADIO ! All cars working from an office instead of hanging around street corners !!!

All these were granted over a period of time in Edinburgh for the sake of public safety at the request of the PH !!
So Chipper! three requests granted and still the public aren't safe ???

It's an interesting balance.

More illegal pick ups, or more rapes. :?

i had a female who i picked up a few weeks back she checked the front plate to make sure it was a PH she was getting in to (pre booked as well) so it does work.

Is it just me, or given the description of the driver I would'nt imagine he's going to be that difficult to trace given that we're talking about an incident in Edinburgh? :?

I'm up in Fife this week, and I have'nt exactly been tripping over many black guys around the City centre . . . lots of freaks from the festival . .

I never said all PH do it, but don't you think the PH companies should kick these guys out ? Maybe things will change when the companies have to be licensed ??
Yes we have rouges in our trade but unlike the PH trade we are easy targets for the cab office to catch !!!

yip ross the public are safe in edinburgh
i had a female who i picked up a few weeks back she checked the front plate to make sure it was a PH she was getting in to (pre booked as well) so it does work.

No thier not !! this is what this topic is about !
And why did your female passenger do this ? it wouldn't have been because of a bad experiance or read of one ??

well ross you tell me how the public are safer getting in to a TAXI than a PH pervs have driven hacks and raped women passangers as well
what stops some perv buying a 2nd hand taxi and carrying out a rape????

Name one in Edinburgh ? I can only think of one serious sexual assault commited in the back of a Hack in my lifetime as a taxidriver. And he was caught pretty quick !! Search the evening news archives and see how many PH drivers have been done.
As for a perv buying a 2nd hand taxi ? Why would he when he has a cheaper option !! his own car !!!
Remember ! we have a partition between us and the passenger !![/quote]
