We have at present a massive building project going on in the City - new shopping precinct etc, so whenever they need space we end up losing ranks, unfortunately we have lost about 4 ranks and in addition we have about another 300 plates on the road. On a Saturday night when the police want everyone home we can park on top of one another and nothing is said, but the rest of the week all they seem to want to do is to keep on moving us on - but nowhere to go!

They give us the odd rank - but nowhere near any business

Inundate them with applications for new ranks on the grounds of public safety

All councils have a constitution.. check what your one says about speaking at Committee meetings...... or contact the licensing committees Clarke and ask that person what the council's rules are regarding speaking to the committee...... hidden away in a lot of councils constitution's is a little clause ..... that can State something like..... if you raised a petition of 25 members of the public of that city.... then the chairperson of the committee has to allow you five minutes to speak, just keep going back again at every licensing committee meeting

Please explain the idea of applying for ranks on the grounds of public safety.

Because here in Brum we are tearing our hair out trying to get ranks. It's the only bit that we regularly fail on & generally get nowhere. The last set of ranks were applied for in October/November 2006 & only now are we getting some of those instated.

Any help would be appreciated.

We applied for a rank outside a popular bar/gig venue; not really a club. PH have ranked outside 10-15 vehicles long for years. We apply for a rank outside. Venue owner tells council he does not want the rank outside. (Gets a good weekly bung from PH operator; our rank would probably cost him £20K per annum out of his back pocket in cash). So, what do the council do? They mark our rank outside the venue, but on the other side of the road, so that PH can continue to stand & ply for hire, right outside the front doors of the venue!!!

That's Brum for you!!!

Thank you Trevor quite a bit of reading there - I take it that the definition of "Stakeholder" means a representative of xxxx members?

If you are the largest organisation why don't you inform the council that you are the major representative of your local cab trade and you demand they are given a voice.

JD not quite so simple unfortunately - if they say the other side has for e.g 700 members and you only have 150 then you cannot make the claim that yours/mine is the major representative.

To yourself and Trevor - I am wondering would any so called representative organisation have to have a constitution, showing their purpose to their members, along with records of membership, meetings and financial records in order to prove that they were bonafide? As it stands without records anyone can make these claims.

What I believe that we have now is an ethnic (so called representative group) probably close on to 100% Asian membership, and this is more than likely illegal as it is almost bordering on racism because no one that I know (white) belongs to them - there again I work totally nights and this body may just be a group that belongs to the dayshift

If thats the case tell them your a minority...you should get thousands of pounds sent your way and perhaps even a translator for council meetings?

I did a little bit of nosing and lo and behold the two (slightly different variation) !) Cardiff Taxi association? 2) Cardiff Hackney association are both registered with "Companies House" at the same address of a Hackney driver (two weeks) after an attempt to set up another association.

Meeting took place on the 3/7/2008 - registrations took place on the 17/07/2008 - weird to say the least.

We notice the debate on Driver representation, and would advise normally Associations lack political clout and influence. We believe and prove frequently that when dealing with Political bodies [councils, Governments etc] it is always the best tactic to deal with the politicians, if they are Labour we will undoubtedly be able to meet and negotiate directly with them, normally successfully. If they are outside that realm, then they are of course extremely vulnerable too our INDUSTRIAL and MEDIA influence. Advice such as having a quite word with the Town Clerk who might give you 5 minutes to speak is puerile; councils only respect and respond to both political and financial strength. The GMB has a body called the National Organising Committee for Professional Drivers Branches nation wide, it has full and part time officers who have the ability to influence driver issues nationwide, in the area being referred to we also have the 3 local MPs associated with us the GMB. If your serious about solving these problems contact either of the two officers listed below.

Very well MrBB thank you.

I look forward to it, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm missing Terry's little takes on life. :D
