You got me there Jimbo.
At a guess I would say yes, as mechanics who pass taxi's are insured to drive any vehicle, but I will check.

Since they made us pay full RFL our vehicles are now insured for business and private use. Also some drivers have their vehicles insured for any driver.
We must not however remove our plates at any time. If done they must be returned to the PCO and the cab re-presented.
Plus if we pop across to France on the Euro-Star we have first to acquire permission from the PCO to take their plates abroad

If the wives drive a Licensed Hackney & are not Licensed Hackney drivers, aren't they breaking the law.

A Licensed Hackney Carriage has to be driven by a Licensed Hackney Cariage Driver, or is it different in London?

this is my point, if the working vehicle is also a family vehicle, i.e. saloon/hatch/not a Lcab, why isnt it allowed that it can be stripped of signage when not working and be driveable by any insured driver?

I have the sick on vinyl ones for my cab, when I went to pick up a new set for my New cab I noticed that they just stuck the vinyl to a board so I asked for a set of vinyl ones as well, they are the same size and you dont have to drill holes and fit the contours of the bumpers.
Any of those vinyl sign makers will make them for you in the colour, size you want

It's the name & address of the makes/manufacturers of these vinyl plates that I am after.

Does your council produce your stick-on plates 'in-house', i.e. at your licensing office, or do they have to order them in?

At the moment in Birmingham, the licensing department uses the Mojo system & makes up the plates, both HC & PH, while you are re-licensing your vehicle, as you wait. It takes about two minutes & you can see & watch your plate being made as you sit at the reception/processing window.

With the large volume of plates in Birmingham, the system would have to allow for on-the-spot plate manufacturing, as is now.

I think someone said they use them in Leeds. Might be worth a phone call to Leeds Licensing on Monday?

Any sign maker will make them for you especially those that do decals for works vans and alike.
That's where the council get ours from and made.
They will measure yours and check the wording and bobs your auntie
Ours dont have an expiry date so we keep them as long as we want

Has their insurance company ever heard of Yates-v-Gates?

Unless their wives have taxi driver licenses they ain't insured, and will get prosecuted for driving a cab without the correct license.

IMO same league as the touts.

is that a dvla offence, a police offence or just a LA offence, im sure i saw a case where just such an action was dropped, the vehicle wasnt working, no fares were being carried, and if it means a family neednt have a 2nd vehicle (think green here) then it is a stupid law, it should only apply to "purpose built" vehicles, not saloons/hatc/mpv vehicles pressed into use/plated.

The only exemption is for a non licensed mechanic doing test runs on the taxi.

Else they must be licensed.

Legal cases for hackney carriages and private hire vehicles can be found on the threads below.

Providing no-one else travels with her, and a vat receipt can be shown to a court to confirm a mechanical test was needed at that time, then she should be ok.
