I'd like to see the Newcastle case, no doubt we will in due course, I wonder how the case was accepted as sufficient enough to warrant a Judicial Review, but without seeing it I'm making wild stabs in the dark.

I was told it was touch and go whether Newcastle were granted permission. I think that speaks for itself. However as per usual, the case will provide a little light entertainment once the decision becomes known.

I don't visualise any change in the licensing setup considering the last proposals on the table were for a zoning structure. However considering the Government are reluctant to sanction any more zones then they may have to rethink that setup.

It would seem the government havent thought it all through...neither have the LA's...mind you there's 360' odd too many la's anyway.

I hope the judge gets in touch with his boss and asks about Gladen, then he makes the judgement that Newcastle must lift the restrictions on numbers as per best practice and forces them to reduce there prices as well :D

I understand Gladen was mentioned and the Deputy Judge who was incidentally sitting on his own was asked to clarify that judgement. However in response to some inaccurate reporting I understand it was stated in court that the reserved judgement would be announced within one to four weeks.

McGuiness represented Newcastle council as we previously reported and Maddox represented taxi Drivers, Charles Holland represented Berwick council and Bryan Roland's participation was associated with Berwick taxi drivers.

There were a number of groups involved including Berwick Taxi drivers' and one group a certain private hire firm quit at the last minute..... I believe one of the questions that the judge asked was..... now let me get this right Berwick is operating a mail order easy to please licensing system..... it also seems that when the judge has pulled his thoughts together he will be contacting both sides and presenting them for his views.... it doesn't often happen that..

Hi All
Im new to this site and to all the polotics that go with driving a taxi even though ive been doing it for 22 years. can someone explain to me what all the fuss is over the berwick plates we have them here in south tyneside where they work as private hire. At present our council charge us 178 every 6 months in fees and 55 a year for 1 badge. And as we all no that the trade at the minite is taking a right hammering what is wrong if i chose to gp to berwick and save 300+ each year x that by the 6 cars i rent out and its just short of 2 grand a year i save. I dont agree with 1 test a year though should be 2. Our council had a meeting with all office owners and told us that they will be putting a clause in the operators licence so we cant use cars from other councils and are looking at ways to prosocute office owners that have already employed them
best regards
steve

I think the main problem is that Berwick Council never see the vehicle nor the driver, as the judge said at the hearing, a mail order licensing system.

Some will ask what is the point of having local standards i.e. knowledge, DSA taxi test, age limits etc if a driver can ignore those and shop around for the cheapest and sh***iest standards.

Do we want a decent taxi/PH service or not? :?
