Row Flares Up Over Empty Taxi Rank Spaces In Pickering
24th September 2008
Two parking bays earmarked for taxis are standing empty for most of the day while irate motorists queue for spaces in Pickering's The Ropery Car Park, a survey has found.
Ryedale Council has been monitoring the taxi rank every day since it was designated for full time use last August following consultation with local taxi drivers.
But a report to the council’s community services committee tomorrow says the two bays are rarely used by taxis during the day and complaints have been received from disgruntled car park users who cannot find a space while they stand empty.
The report suggests the best way forward is to make the rank time-restricted for taxi use between 6.30pm and 6am. It says this would ensure the maximum number of car parking spaces at The Ropery for public use during the day, generating up to £6,900 a year income for the council.
The committee will decide whether to go for this option at tomorrow’s meeting.
