Crackdown catches out defective taxis

DOZENS of defective taxis have again been declared unfit for business as part of an ongoing crackdown at East Midlands Airport.

Out of 100 taxis and private hire cars stopped at the Castle Donington site during the operation by police and North West Leicestershire District Council, 25 were identified as failing to meeting the required legal standard, or having uninsured or unlicensed drivers.

During the operation, three vehicles were found to seriously breach Vehicle Operator and Services Agency (VOSA) regulations by having a broken indicator, defective brakes and two worn tyres.

Four vehicles were found to have excessively tinted glass and there were 15 incidents of council regulation breaches recorded, including no fire extinguisher, no first aid kits, no inspection booklet and minor defects to bodywork.

On five occasions, the driver failed to display their licence and one driver was immediately taken off the road for having no license or insurance.

Furthermore, one district council-licensed vehicle was checked and the driver found not to be wearing his driver's licence.

His taxi's interior light was broken, 'no smoking' signs were not displayed, the brake pads were seriously worn and the anti-slip covering on the brake pedal was defective.

The driver has until today to rectify the problems.

District councillor Nicholas Rushton said: "This was another successful day for our enforcement officers and those of the participating authorities.

"We will continue to work with East Midlands Airport, Leicestershire Police and neighbouring authorities to stop unfit taxis and drivers operating in our district."

The result comes just over three months after enforcement officers identified more than 40 taxis unfit for business at the airport - including one which was being run on vegetable oil.

Leicestershire Police's Sergeant Stephen Smith said: "Our main priority is to keep the public safe when getting a taxi to and from the airport.

"Passengers should be able to get into a taxi knowing that it is roadworthy and driven by someone who has a license otherwise there could be problems with insurance claims should they be involved in an accident.

"We will continue to work with our partner agencies to target unlicensed and unsafe taxis."

This tinted glass thing is mental...drivers are deemed fit and proper!
