Taxi fare cheat hit driver with metal pole
This is Plymouth!
A PLYMOUTH taxi driver who ran after a passenger who left without paying was attacked with a metal pole, city magistrates were told.
James McLean, 19, was with another man in the taxi on the night of August 31 when they both fled from the cab after it pulled up in the St Budeaux area.
McLean, of Thames Gardens, was said to have run at the driver with a metal pole when he pursued them.
McLean hit the driver across his back, ripping his shirt and inflicting a three-inch cut.
Police arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and McLean appeared out of a nearby garden, the court heard.
In court McLean pleaded guilty to assault and jointly making off without payment for the £13 taxi journey.
Magistrates heard McLean had been drinking heavily and thought the driver was about to attack him.
He had since shown remorse and realised he should not have behaved as he did.
McLean was ordered to carry out 60 hours' unpaid work in the community and to pay the taxi driver £100 compensation.
