Do you not think this 'strike' is an ego trip by Che Guevara?

I was up in St Albans last Thursday with the GMB PDB members with Terry, after a great deal of debate the lads voted by about 7 to 1 to refrain from working from 2200 hrs today to 0400 hrs tomorrow. I guess these issues must have been the straws that broke the camel's back.

BB

I think its all quite astonishing.....the press releases for example, talk about a red rag to a bull.

Taxi strike leaves dozens stranded
11:25pm Saturday 4th October 2008

DOZENS of commuters arriving at St Albans City Station were left stranded in the pouring rain tonight when taxi drivers went on strike.

People either braved the horrendous weather opting to walk home, caught lifts or waited in the cold for a bus after cabbies suddenly deserted the taxi rank outside the station at 10pm.

Backed by the GMB Union, drivers stayed true to their word and refused to pick up passengers between 10pm tonight until 4am tomorrow morning.

But the strike action couldn't have come at a worse time for those hoping to hail a lift home from the station.

Louise Williams of Church Street, St Albans along with her mum and dad, who had travelled from Nottingham for the weekend, found themselves stuck without a lift after spending a day shopping in London.

The family claimed the protest had not been publicised enough and they were eventually forced to make the final leg of their journey on foot.

She said: "We were planning to go back by taxi tonight. We were quite happy walking down here today, but we don't want to walk in this weather -why didn't they strike this morning?"

The family were not alone in their frustration, the station foyer was packed with desperate people contemplating how to get home.

Eighty-year-old Marjorie Byers had just travelled from Newcastle, but had narrowly missed the strike deadline due to train delays.

Bhatia Surinder also found herself unexpectedly stranded with her 12-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son after returning from an evening at the theatre in London. She said she had little option but to call on her husband, who was looking after their small baby, for a lift. "I didn't know it was happening," she said. "I don't use cabs very much, we normally walk or take the car.

"We're all tired, we can all do without it to be honest."

But with few taxis in sight it promised to be a difficult night for many hoping to call a cab.

Taxi drivers were protesting about the council's refusal to allow a fares increase, and its insistence on banning any driver with six penalty points or more on his or her driving licence.

Captain,

Its irrespective what you or I think, the GMB PDB will always follow its members wishes after a full debate and transparent vote.

BB,

Nice to see the only people who were inconvenienced were families and pensioners.

Interestingly enough, the article above doesn't say a single word against the council, it does seem to cast aspersions on the taxi trade though.

Quite common for those types of customers to be out in the early hours of Sunday. :?

I applaud the lads from St Albans having the front to fight against a two-bob council and a cow of a licensing officer.

And if a few old dears and families have the hump, then best they ring the cow on Monday.

Are you suggesting that the report by CC may not be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

Well I didn't believe it anyway.

Captain,

The report was issued last night by the St Albans & Harpenden Review at 23.25 hrs.

http://www.stalbansreview.co.uk/news/37 ... _stranded/

It is hoped that the Council Leader and Chairperson of St Albans council will contact the GMB representative to arrange a meeting as soon as possible.

Initial reports from the drivers that I have spoken to indicate that 95% of all H/C did not work last night. THe H/C fleet was also joined by many P/H and some of the company owners.

St Albans GMB PDB section committee members have informed me that further action is planned, although a decision will be made as to whether or not a warning will be given next time.

Mr Flanagan has asked me to thank the police on duty who handled a potentilly explosive situation well. Even to the extent where police officers were telling out of town vehicles to clear off.

Apparently the police understand Taxi law better than some of the licensing officers of St Albans council.

Regards
BB

Could the taxi owners do a Berwick and go PH and obtain there licences from a neighboring council, or even Berwick if need be and hand in all there plates so that the council looses revenue, and has no control over them at all, just a though
