Gas prices drop. Should taxi fares drop too?


Gas prices were cited as one reason for the increase in taxi drop rates approved by City Council this past summer.

Now that gasoline prices have dropped, should taxi rates be reduced correspondingly?

Ward 5 Councillor David Celetti thinks so.

Celetti served notice tonight that he'll be asking the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board to review the minimum drop rate of $3.90 that cab owners can charge you just for stepping into a taxi.

"All cab fares... need to be as inexpensive as possible to to encourage usage as an alternative to drinking and driving," Celetti said.

The local police services board has traditionally shown little interest in interfering in the business side of the taxi industry, preferring to restrict its involvement to safety issues such as the mechanical safety of vehicles and the vetting of prospective drivers.

The fare increase we just had was the first for nearly 3 years, we're entitled to an increase.

When Councillors practice what they preach I will listen because no doubt he does not come cheap!

I see Taxis as a better way of travelling and as such you have to pay for the nicer things in life, we should not be regarded as such being just a "DRUNK/INTOXICATED CARRYING VEHICLE" and having to put our/your safety on the line to appease people like the above - if you are drunk OR over intoxicated then cheap or expensive does not come into it - I am not taking you home - cheeky bathplug!

Down here it is a couple of "Private Hire Companies" that have put up their meter fares by I am told 17% - Hackneys are the same price as 2 years ago. The representation (Hackneys) have put forward on two occasions for a rise only to be knocked back, with the price of fuel falling it looks like we will have shouldered all the cost.

So! shame on who ?

I agree, our fares at the behest of the local association went up this year by a much smaller proportion than the fuel.....the association has subsequently been proved right....even though the doom-mongers tell us we'll be facing higher fuel bills next year.

Opec will make sure fuel prices go up BUT round here there is a LOT of pressure on firms to cut quoted fares and a lot of customers playing one firm off against another to see how much they can force the fares down by it is normal practise round here for people to walk up and down the ranks of hackneys haggling with each driver until one agrees a silly price

round here you do only 1 in 10 fares at meter rate at night bit more in the day

Well then change the meter rate.

What's the point of having a meter if you don't use it. You might as well be PH. Whatever happened to HC's sticking together and refusing to reduce prices at the whim of the tight customer, unless of course your bills are halve what everybody elses are. People get in my taxi and complain about how much everything has gone and then complains at the cost of the fare which hasn't risen in a year and accuses you of trying to rip em off.

OMG!! So we did, but I can't see how anybody thinks that deregulation is a good idea. Is it true that some councils are back tracking and regulating again after they have deregulated?

I think you'll find those of us who think regulation is probably a better idea than deregulation are in a minority on this forum.

However, it is my mission to enlighten these non believers.

Some councils have re-regulated.....but they are few and far between.
